“Thank you so much mom,” I said breathlessly as we climbed into the back of her Chrysler 300. Yeah, my dad provided us with nice cars and stuff. It was the least he could do, seeing as he couldn’t really stick around for my childhood.
“No problem sweetie. So...how did...everything go?” She sent me a meaningful look and I inwardly groaned. She wasn’t supposed to know about my job tonight. Sure, she knew my father wanted me to do these things, but she wasn’t exactly for it.
“It went fine,” I answered shortly. Andy shot me a quizzical look but I just smiled back at him tightly. I sure as hell didn’t want him to know about this.
“So, Andy, correct?” my mom asked, apparently deciding to strike up a conversation with the near-stranger.
He nodded, then cleared his throat. “Er, yeah. Andy Stator.”
“Hmm...” My mom nodded thoughtfully. “So how do you know Raven?”
“Alyxx,” I corrected in a growl. My mother merely chuckled and shook her head.
Andy smiled at me, and I swear my small spark of anger melted away. “I met her at school. She’s quite smart, you know.” I felt myself blush. Luckily, it was semi-dark in the car and I don’t think he saw.
My mom grinned. “Yes, I know she is.” Wow, my very first compliment from my mother. Usually she complains about how much I’m like my father. Well she’s the one who fu-
“We’re here!” My mother interrupted my thoughts. I mumbled a quick thanks before practically dragging Andy out of the car. He chuckled lightly.
I pulled him inside and upstairs to the guest room. I didn’t want him to see the mess in the living room. I wasn’t the only one in my family, but I was obviously the only one who knew how to clean up.
“Well, there’s a bed, a shower, and there should be clothes in the closet.” I pointed at the various places in the room. “My room’s across the hall if you need anything.”
He gave me a small smile and gently caught hold of my hand. “Thank you for this, Alyxx.”
I blushed slightly and smiled back. “No problem. Just doing a friend a favor.” His smile seemed to grow at that. I was actually quite surprised at my own words. And here I was, planning not to make any friends. I guess we see how well that worked.
I noticed that we were standing quite close and he still had my hand in his. I cleared my throat awkwardly. “Well, uhm...I’ll be in my room. You might want to take a shower. You smell pretty bad.”
He laughed and let go of my hand. “Good idea. Well, goodnight.” I left and pretended to go into my room until I heard him start the shower. Then I quickly made my way back downstairs and into the living room.
“Clean this mess up!” I whisper-yelled at my half-brother, Eryk. Instead of taking out criminals like I did, he was a monster. He brought home innocent people, girls and boys alike, making them think he cared for them. Then he murdered them. My father didn’t care, as long as he got some souls to take with him. Quite frankly, Eryk was not a human. The boy was a demon!
Well, okay, technically he was human. We didn’t have the same mother, obviously. His mother died in childbirth and somehow, my father convinced my mother to raise him as her own. I’m pretty sure she regretted it nowadays, what with all of the killing he’s been doing.
Originally, I took him with me and we both took out the bad guys. But once he hit middle school age, he actually got into it and he resorted to winning over people’s hearts and then ripping them out-literally. I blame it on puberty.
“Awh, Raven, I swear I didn’t do it.” The small boy with raven-black hair (haha, shut up) looked up at me innocently. I might have fallen for it, had it not been for the blood all over him and the poor girl’s heart sitting in his left hand.
“You’re disgusting,” I growled, shoving him over and walking past him. “Now clean it the hell up!”
He morphed back into his actual form, which was a tall fourteen year old boy packed with muscles. “You’re no fun,” he pouted. He proceeded to do as I had told him though. Man, it felt good to have control. Even if it was control over my monster of a little brother.
