Reality

A morning rush currently engulfed a hospital in City X. Series of ambulances arrived at the entrance of the building, followed by nurses and doctors who carried out the patients to the beds that they had arranged beforehand. Not long after, the zones start to fill up and the waiting room starts to build.

One of the patients was a woman in white wedding dress that laid on the bed unconscious. One could already see that she was a very beautiful woman; her features were delicate, her nose was tall and sharp, her lips were thin, her long eyelashes were as black as a crow feather yet her most striking feature, her bright clear pupils were shut behind her eyelids as they scrunched up in pain. Her long wavy ebony hair scattered as it extended all the way to her waist, some of its roots were soaked in blood, sticking to her scalp due to the injuries.

Her white dress was in a similar state; it had long lost its elegance as it was now wrinkled in dust, its internal clothing stained with massive amounts of similar crimson liquid.

The doctors and nurses quickly pushed the bed to the Emergency Department in hope to save the young lady's life.

He Qing Nian saw their grim expressions from afar before their figures quickly disappeared behind the glass doors. Although the woman's figure was no longer in sight, his body was still frozen in place, seemingly stuck in that same spot.

"President He," His secretary, Rui, quickly called out the man who was still in stupor, "Let's find a seat. I'm sure the doctors will be able to heal her."

Hearing the man's voice, his body moved slightly only to stop again when he saw his reflection in the glass wall.

The man in the reflection has a tall and slender figure, his body was attractive as it was cladded in a black tuxedo. His hair that was neatly combed back was now loosely falling from his sideburns, giving people a wild and unrestrained feeling. His eyes that were previously full of smiles were now void of emotion, blankly staring ahead as his mind was overcome with shock.

Everything happened in just an hour.

His wandering mind brought him to a scene a few minutes before. He saw his fiancée cross the street in a hurry as they were late for their wedding, she was on the other side of it and him waiting for her patiently. He clearly saw the red light turned green, and she didn't wait any longer to run to him, her face full of smiles as her bright eyes stared at him full of anticipation. Her hands picked up her long white dress, dragging it behind her as her black heels clacked against the pavement.

Clack, clack, clack. It resounded in rhythm to his thumping heart.

"He Qing Nian!" She shouted with excitement, her smile so wide it made him lost in it. A pair of dimples appearing on her cheeks.

At that moment, he felt as if it was only the two of them that exist in this mundane world, her soul lighting up his bleak one.

They were only a meter away from each other, his arms opened up to welcome her figure into his embrace, yet what he caught was just an empty air.

He didn't see a car coming speeding up to her— none of them did.

Just like a slow motion, the car swerved, out of control as it came crashing onto her. The car tiles bashed over the concrete surface, shrieking painfully in his ears. He saw her body jerked against the dashboard and her head colliding against the cold hard ground, and she landed a few feet before him. He was so far but he could hear a loud crack coming from her body.

She was motionless, with pools of blood spurting out of her mouth.

No!

At that moment, he screamed.

And he continued to scream for her as he rushed to her body, his voice desperately calling for her name.

Wake up. He seemed to say.

Wake up and tell me this is all a dream.

"President He, pull yourself together!" Rui grabbed his body and shook it hard. "You have to keep your sanity together for her! The doctor will operate her successfully!"

Yet the man's loud voice turned muddled, just like a sound drowned in pools of water, only remaining as whispers of the living.

No matter how desperately his reasoning claims that this is a dream, the emptiness in his heart, and the coldness seeping in his bones carried a sense of reality.

Will she die?

The moment the preposterous thought hit him, severe chills ran down his spine. Her lively voice that called out his name will be a nightmare that trapped him in his own dreams, continuously trapping him in a guilty cycle that eats away his soul.

Slowly but surely.

I...don't need a world without her.

Without her, my existence is meaningless.

Just then, a loud childish voice rang in his dark mind, opening up a crack to let a sliver of light in.

[Congratulations for initiating Capture the Soul Fragments System!] The childish voice said.

[Rong Lu Xue, the female lead of this world had her soul fragments scattered across the galaxies due to a car accident. To bring her back, the host needs to travel across the galaxies and collect her soul fragments! Will you accept this mission?]

He Qing Nian read the incoming text with a sliver of expectation. He just barely pulled back the last straw of sanity that he had. He didn't question it, he simply accepted the abnormal strange voice in his head.

Will it bring her back? He questioned.

[Yes, host. Your fiancée is currently in a coma. Bound yourself to me, complete the mission, and she will live to see another day.]

Sure then.

He Qing Nian did not care about the voice's origins or its identity. Whether this voice was God speaking to him or a demonic being that will corrode his heart, he will accept the offer without a single bat of his eyelashes.

All for her.

Her existence carried that much weight in his heart, enough to sell his own soul to the devil.

[Then, let me transfer you to the first world! Enjoy~]

All of a sudden, his vision blackened as his soul was ripped apart from his body. The action was excruciatingly painful but before he could release a groan, the man lost his consciousness. The soulless body slumped onto the cold hard ground, like a puppet whose strings were cut.
