I woke up to the sound of the alarm going off, telling us to get up for work. I reached over and shoved the clock off the nightstand.
"Honey..." Ian groaned wrapping his arm around me and tucking me next ito his chest. "Let's stay home today."
"That's fine with me, love." I whispered. I didn't want to get up. Like, who actually does?
It only felt like 10 minutes, but hours later the phone interrupted Ian and I in the middle of....playing monopoly.
"I'll get it." I sighed getting up.
"Noooooo....." Ian whined throwing a pillow at my bare ass.
"I'll be back." I laughed.
Although I was naked, I walked through the apartment and to the phone.
I picked up the phone and said "Hello?" .
"Hello, is this Beth Lohmann?"
"Yes, and who is this?" I asked, but I knew the voice.
"Hello, my dear Beth. This is Dr. Hammond. I'd like to peacefully speak with you and Ian in my hotel room."
"Why should I trust you?"
"Because this time I'm willing to pay you. For all you've done."
"I'm afraid Ian and I didn't take any pictures while we were trapped in your addition to your science project."
"Oh I know. I just felt maybe I should apologize in a major way."
"I'm still not convinced."
"As much as you want I can give it to you. Please trust me."
"I'd feel more comfortable if we met somewhere."
"Oh quit being paranoid."
"Then the deal is off."
"Fine, fine, meet me for coffee at the same Starbucks then. At 4."
"Deal." I finish setting the phone down. Could this man ever give up?
I walked back into the bedroom and Ian looks at me waiting for the news. He sees the stress on my face and leans over and gets his glasses and puts them on.
"What uh who was it?" He asks pulling me back down on the bed.
"It was Hammond." I sigh preparing for the anger.
"You have got to be kidding me..." Ian began sitting upright shaking his head.
"He wants us to meet him at the coffee shop down the street and he wants to pay us." I explain.
"We didn't take pictures!" Ian says throwing his hands in the air.
"I understand that, Ian. He says he wants to apologize. " I say sitting up too.
"You don't really believe him do you?" Ian asked shocked.
"Now why would I trust him?" I retort.
"Did you agree to us meeting him?" He asks dodging my question completely.
"Well yes, but that doesn't mean I'm on his side." I shoot back.
"Beth, no no no no no no. Why did you- why did you agree? Do you want us to get hurt? Think- just think please!" He almost yells. The last part really hurt me.
I get up from the bed and walk into the kitchen without a word. I yank the milk out from the fridge and a cup from the cabinet, and slam both down on the counter. From the corner of my eye I see Ian has followed me in. I quickly pour my milk into the cup and stomp away to the bathroom forgetting the milk jug. Ian puts it away for me.
I walk into the closet and pick out something to wear. I pull a dress over my head and not pay any attention to Ian who is standing there watching me with slight regret hanging on his face.
I brush my hair out and put earrings in. I brush my teeth, and take one last look. Ian has been watching the whole time, probably thinking of something to say.
"I'm uh I'm sorry." He says coming up behind me, resting his head on top of mine.
"Save it." I snap shoving him off and walking away.
"Beth no. Beth please." He says following me towards the door.
"If you're coming. I'm giving you 5 minutes to get ready. I'll be in the car." I say sternly, grabbing my keys and heading out. Ian gives me a sorrowful look and turns back around quickly.
I start my car and look at the time. It's 3:44 and I'm giving Ian until 3:49 to get down here or I'm leaving.
I wait and wait until its 3:48 and I finally see Ian scrambling towards the car.
"Took you long enough." I mutter driving off.
"Beth-" Ian whispers grabbing my hand that's rested on the middle console. "I'm sorry, I love you."
"I love you too." I manage to say keeping my eyes on the road.
We make it to Starbucks without any more words said and we go inside. My watch reads 3:57 and Hammond isn't there. Ian and I order cappunchinos and find a place to sit where Hammond can easily find us. Exactly at 4:00, Hammond strides in, looking happy as ever. He casually orders a drink from the barista and joins us. He sits across from Ian and I and leans in on the table, as if to examine us from a closer view.
"So, you two. Where do I start?" He smiles.
"Anywhere. We have a lot of time to waste." I say, not returning the smile. I feel Ian nudge me with his elbow under the table.
"Well I must say, you two are a beautiful couple!" He chuckles readjusting his glasses.
"Thank you." I say quickly. Get to the money.
"I can't express how sorry I am for the emotional wreck I have caused you two." He says shaking his head in sorrow. Please, you aren't fooling anybody.
"You have that right." I mutter loud enough for only us 3 to hear.
"I am willing to put any number down." He says pulling out his check book.
"I honestly don't think a price will fix both our emotional and physical damage." I say taking a quick sip of coffee.
"But it could come in handy. In the future of course. A wedding maybe? Children? Those both cost a great amount of money. And if you do recall I always say, spared no expense. I could spare no expense with this deal." He says smiling like he just won the whole world.
Ian and I turn our heads to each other and debate. How much? Is it right? Do we need the money? Should we trust Hammond after all he's done? We come to a decision.
"One million will be our price. $1,000,000 will be all." Ian says grabbing my hand under the table.
"Perfect! I'll get the check ready!" Hammond agrees pulling out a pen. We watch closely as he scribbles down on the check. He hands it to me and I look down on it . I check for any mistakes, or lies, or tricks. Its all real. Its usable. We thank Dr. Hammond for his business and leave. We stop by the bank and deposit the check in our account then go back home.
As we sit on the couch watching The X Files, I look at Ian and ask "What now?"
"I guess life will uh find a way for us to plan the wedding we want." He says, and I get the reference.
"I love you, my choactic fiance." I say proudly.
"I love you, my choactic fiancee."
