It's been a week living alone in this empty home, the bleak walls seem to be caving in. I won't have to stand in this house any longer once I get my inheritance. As soon as the money is transferred I am heading straight for central Manhattan. Sure it isn't that far from here but at least it will be busier. Dad and I were never close, he was always working to give me the life I have, and I owe him for that. However when we were together he was distant, he was always thinking about something else. Sometimes I just want to be loved, I don't need to live lavishly.
As if on que I hear a knock on the door and Sophia barking. Sophia is a Dalmatian I got for Christmas about four years ago. She is extremely excitable. I make my way to the door to reveal the bank teller, my dad's lawyer, and the reporter lady. I lead the small group of people over to the grand living quarters, crazy to think this is going to be mine in a few hours. Not that I am going to keep it, when I sell it though money won't be a problem for ages.
The banker drags on and on about how inheritance works while my dad's lawyer is organizing the documents.
I have been given enough to get a studio in Central Manhattan, but not much to spare. This is when my father's lawyer hands over the document agreeing to the will. Am I not being given the estate?
"What about the estate" I say meekly, not wanting to offend anyone.
"He didn't mention it so it goes to the state" the banker explains.
I'm going to have to get a job.
Another week passes and it is move in day. Sophia and I take one look at the house and usher into the cart. Being limited on what I can bring to my new life I settle on my matress, bedframe, sheets, clothing, and nothing else.
The July breeze is nice as we slowly leave the estate. We pass a Jewish bakery with a sign on the door asking for help. I can bake, and hey it's money. However it is a few blocks from my house, at least a half hour commute on foot. The cart stops and the driver gets out to help me move everything in.
As soon as he leaves I head towards the bakery, no need to waste time. The bell above the door signals my arrival. A lady looks up from the counter meeting my eyes, then falling to Sophia. She immediately shoots up from the counter and runs over to us.
"Can I give him a treat" the lady asks, already holding a homemade treat above Sophia's nose.
"Of course! Oh, and by chance do you know who I can speak to about the job opening" I say, attempting to shift the conversation.
The lady's name is Wendy, and is my new boss. The upside of having a lovable dog I guess.
This is my new life now.
Or so I thought, money is running short and I had to improvise. I could gamble my earnings away in hopes of making more. Gambling is a track, the reasons casinos stay in business is because they rely on you losing. However with the atmosphere of the place it wouldn't be hard to pick up some extra coins from people's pockets. Pickpocketing is a slippery slope, can I risk a relapse. I have too, or else I won't be able to afford rent. I'm not going to be too short on rent, I don't need to steal that much.
