5 Years Later
I woke up breathless. As usual. The same nightmare I had since I lost him. The same one I have every damn time I close my eyes.
A lot has changed since that day.
I still look for him. I still fight for him and I know and hope somewhere he is doing the same for me.
I have a lead of a WCKD compound so I need to get moving, the past 5 years changed me. I learnt a lot about survival extremely quickly as I didn't really have any other choice.
But now, I'm fearless. And he is the only thing on my mind. As usual.
WCKD was not what it promised us it would be, from what I hear, they aren't keeping kids safe, they're picking out the weak from the immune. They do this through tests, some of them die during these. But I know Newt is okay.
After the first initial shock of the Scorch, the world went to shit basically. Nothing was ever the same. The economy collapsed entirely, WCKD pretty much are the 'Government' or what's left of it.
But most people were lost to the Flare. A deadly virus that eats away at the brain, sending anyone infected insane. They become what we now know as Cranks.
They look like people, barely, but the exterior is merely a shadow of who those people were before they got bitten. WCKD are using the next generation to find a cure, or at least that's what they're telling everyone. But I know it's bullshit.
Cranks plague the earth and it's either kill or become one. Being alone for the past 4 years has allowed me to understand my capabilities. For the first year after I was separated from Newt, I was taken in.
A kind, but dangerous and ruthless man took pity on me and taught me everything I now know. How to be deadly, not just to cranks, but to anyone and anything that poses a threat.
His name was Elijah. We had a good year together, 9 months in, at age 14 I was just as skilled as he was, if not better as my reflexes were at a peak.
But it came to an abrupt end when he got bitten. I shot him, right between the eyes as that was always the deal. Neither of us wanted to lose ourselves to this disease, so it was our pact from the start and I'd be dammed if I didn't keep to it after he got sick.
He was a good man. Someone I'll never forget. But right now, my focus was back on Newt and finding him. This lead was promising and I had a good feeling about it.
Once I was packed up and removed any trace of me being there I was on my way.
I walked for a good few hours before I caught sight of the compound. It was pretty damn hard to miss. It was a giant concrete circle with WCKD plastered all over the sides of it, all I had to do now was get in. Which is a lot easier said than done. Especially in these places, they are crawling with armed guards. Mostly to keep the cranks out. So hopefully there was somewhere I could sneak in.
As I got closer, I laid down flat on the sand dune so I would be harder to spot. I scanned the area, I could see 6 guards at the main entrance. I decided to look for another way in first.
I scoured the outside, finally finding a small bolted door with no guards outside. It was probably a fire exit so couldn't be unlocked from the outside. But luckily for me, I could probably figure out a way in.
I checked my gun to ensure it was loaded and made sure I had a substantial amount of ammo. I put my hand gun in the holster around my leg and kept the shotgun around my torso. Attached to my back I had a bow with arrows in case I needed to go stealth. Elijah was a godsend to me, without him I wouldn't know any of this and would probably be dead.
I approached the door silently and keeping away from all possible sightings from those inside. Once I reached the door I collapsed to my knees taking off my backpack and opening a small roll of tools.
Taking on of them, I slid the flat surface into the crack of the door, feeling the latch. Slowly I began inching it back into the slot in the door itself.
Click!
It slid back into place.
"Fuck." I muttered, before trying again.
I did it again, slower this time, getting closer and closer when I felt the flat metal sheet I was using move through to the other side completely.
"There we go." I said triumphant. I quickly gathered up all my stuff and gripped the shotgun. The door pushed open and I got inside. There was no one about. It was just a corridor, long and I couldn't see either end.
I looked around immediately checking to see if there was any cameras. There was none, or at least that I could see.
Moving forward, I kept my feet light on the ground until I came to a door. It was marked exit. I pushed it open and it revealed a lab of sorts, filled with so many people.
I immediately shut the door again, slowly, hoping no one had seen it open.
"Shit shit shit." I muttered. I pulled my long brown hair into a ponytail on the back of my head, a few pieces falling out either side. I braved myself to open the door and just go bloody murder. My hand moved towards the handle, I gripped the cold metal and was about to pull when I heard the oh to familiar sound of a trigger.
"Get on the ground now." A mans voice spoke, as he jabbed my head with the barrel of his gun.
Brilliant...
