I feel suddenly relieved. Daryl seems to know this world, so maybe he really can help me!

> So you know how to help Jason?

Daryl > I didn't say that, sweetheart.

> So? What then?! I let this guy kill my little brother without doing anything about it? I'm just a communications officer! I don't know how to find 500,000 bucks in a week! I need you. Don't let me down, please. For my brother's sake.

A deathly silence falls over the living room, while Daryl and I stare at each other. The muffled sound of voices reaches us from outside. The party should start soon. I try to wait silently, for Daryl to speak up. I feel like my life is on the line, hanging on his next words, and this feeling leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. In reality, it's Jason's life that depends on this man's goodwill. I would have preferred to handle things differently, but I have no choice.

Matt > So, bro? Are you gonna tell us now, or are you waiting for the next full moon?

Daryl glares at him before looking back at me.

Daryl > I have a couple of things to clear up first.

Joe > Oh, man! Come on. It's pretty clear, to me. She needs you, and from what I know, you can help her.

I look at Daryl a little insolently. I understand that he needs to be provoked to finally react.

> In fact, you're afraid of losing face in front of your buddy and your brother! Is that it? You think I tricked you, so you're making me pay for it?

Daryl looks at me, angry and clenches his teeth. It seems I fired straight!

> You're wondering when it is that I sweet talked you, aren't you?

He suddenly spins around towards Matt. The two brothers exchange a knowing look. Something's going on between them! I quickly glance at Joe, who's been looking at me since earlier.

Joe > Dude... maybe you'd rather I play the knight in shining armour for you? I don't mind, you know...

I pause, surprised. What's Joe implying? What is he talking about? Could he help me too? I'm having trouble grasping the whole situation, we barely know each other! I think he must have said that just to make Daryl decide...

Daryl > Oh, yeah? Well, as far as I know, she didn't come to you for help, so stay out of it.

Joe > I don't think so! You don't seem to want to decide, whereas I already know what I'd do...

Wow! What's going on?! I must be dreaming?! This is amazing! Two hunks for the price of one!

Daryl > Yeah, OK! I think someone's waiting for you outside.

Joe > It's still early. I'd rather stay here.

Daryl shrugs his shoulders and turns to me. I'm scared of what will follow.

Daryl > First, you answer my question, then I decide. OK?

I nod even if thought I'm dying to shake some sense into him to make him decide, Jason's life is at stake here.

Daryl > What did you do all this for? Was it to get to know me or to save your brother?

> I'm going to be honest with you, Daryl. It was partly for Jason, but... There was also something about you that made me want to get to know you more.

Daryl > OK.

> Is that it? OK?

He's toying with me! That's not an answer!
