I jump up sharply, my heart thumping in my chest, while I turn towards the open door, my eyes open wide.
Joe > What are you doing?
Joe. Oh, my god, it's just my luck! I brush a hand through my hair, racking my brain for the most plausible excuse that could justify my presence here. If I tell him I'm drunk, that might work, right? No, forget it, you're not drunk! Then I say the first thing that comes to mind.
> I just wanted to be alone, that's all.
Given the look on his face, he doesn't believe a word of it. I'm in trouble!
Joe > Don't take me for an idiot! Come on, get out of there!
I stare at him scowling and do as I'm told. Joe then holds the palm of his hand up and waves his fingers.
Joe > They keys.
I heave a sigh raising my eyebrows and drop the ignition key in his hand. I'm done for. No, correction: Jason is done for! Joe's gonna spill all to Daryl and everything will be over for good!
> You were supposed to be busy.
Joe > As you can see, I'm keeping an eye on you...
> Yeah, I can see that. Unfortunately...
I expect repercussions, for him to take me straight to Daryl, but nothing. The seconds pass, and he just stands there. Noting that he's not doing anything, I decide to move away and start walking. Joe's hand closes on me, and I look up and meet with his beautiful grey eyes.
Joe > Are you going to explain this to me?
> Explain what? There's nothing to explain!
Joe > Okay, Lucille. I'm not Daryl, so we're gonna make this quick, okay? Either you explain yourself, or I show you out. It's up to you.
> Well, go ahead! What are you waiting for?! Chuck me out!
Joe > Don't play that game with me, Lucille. We're not kids anymore.
He's not wrong. Besides, I don't really want to leave, to be honest. I calm down a little and decide to explain myself.
> Okay. If you want me to explain myself, I will.
Joe > Good choice. I'm listening to you. What were you doing in the car?
> Look, it's stupid, I know, but look at him over there... strutting around like a rooster in a farmyard. My brother is in danger, and he's...
Joe > Wait, hold on. Run that by me again, please, and take it slow.
I take a deep breath.
> Joe, my brother messed up big time.
Joe > I know.
> Matt told me Daryl could help me and look at him!
I point out Daryl flirting with a group of girls. He seems to have forgotten about me pretty quickly.
> He doesn't give a shit! You can see that, can't you?! Days go by, and he flirts! That nutcase Maccini gave Jason a very tight deadline.
My voice cracks, and I look at Joe, almost imploringly.
> He's my little baby brother for Christ's sake! I don't want him to die because he got caught up in some stupid bullshit!
