But instead, I give in, and a muffled sob escapes my lips. I get up quickly and rush out of the office. Immediately, Matt gets up and catches up with me. He grabs my arm and drags me outside.

Matt > Come on, let's get some fresh air.

I gently shake him off. We cross the hall and get to the elevator. Once downstairs, we leave the building and find a quiet spot to talk. Matt leans against the wall and folds his arms across his chest.

Matt > Okay, I'm listening. What's going on? Is Jason that bad?

I stare at him for a long time, holding back the tears. It's not like me to crack. But with the responsibility sitting on my shoulders, and last night's failure, it's all too much! I'm at the end of my rope, and I need help. So I tell him everything.

> Yes, I mean. He's fine, physically, for now.

Matt > What do you mean, for now? Lucille, I'm your friend, you can tell me anything, you know that, don't you.

> I know.

I take a deep breath before telling him everything.

> Jason's in trouble. Big trouble. Much more serious than the blows he got. He screwed up big time.

Matt stares at me impenetrable. I keep going.

> His stupid buddies convinced him to steal a luxury car. Some other guys saw him and chased after him.

Matt > So he didn't have an accident then?

> He did. He crashed the car and smashed it, then they found him. Now, the guys want compensation. Otherwise...

I prefer not to say anything about the drugs and the ultimatum. I've already said too much, there's no need to add to it all.

> Matt, we don't have that sort of money! I don't know how to pay these guys back, and Jason... Jason's stuck in the hospital, so...

I bite my cheek, I'm far too proud to finish my sentence, so I let Matt do the talking.

Matt > So you need help on this one.

I nod and look away. Matt runs a hand through his hair and starts to pace.

Matt > I don't get it. Can't your parents do anything? Did you at least talk to them about it?

> No. They're done hearing about Jason's problems. It's ... complicated.

Matt > Family is always complicated.

I know that he knows what he's talking about, given what he said about his brother. I'd like to know more about his relationship with Daryl but now's not the time. I hold back from askign and let him continue.

Matt > Well, if you can't count on your parents, we have to find something else.

> Believe me, I've gone over and over it a hundred times in my head. There's no solution.

Matt > Can't you ask a bank for a loan?

I sigh. I didn't want to tell him about the deadline, but I don't think I really have a choice.

> Forget it! It would take too long.

Matt raises an eyebrow and stops dead.

Matt > What do you mean, too long?

His gaze hardens for an instant as he puts two and two together in his head.

Matt > Lucille... The guys who chased your brother. Do you know who they are?

I look down and nod.

Matt > Who is it? Tell me, Lucille.

> Giorgio Maccini's guys.

Matt > Shit!

Matt just yelled that out, I'm somewhat surprised. He's usualy so calm, it's not like him. I see him tense up, and his jaw twitches as he runs his hand back through his tousled hair.

Matt > Ok. Go back to work, I'll see what I can do.

> You don't have to, Matt. He's my brother and...

Matt > And you're my friend! So, if I can help you, I will. Now you og back up to the office and try to focus on something else.

He walks me to the building entrance then leaves to og and do God knows what. I do as he asked me and head back up to the 42nd floor. Once I reach my desk, I try to get to work, but it's impossible. I keep staring at the office door, hoping to see Matt appear. Luckily, Gabriel's not around; otherwise, it would have been a total disaster. When Matt finally reappears, my heart starts thumping hard. He has a serious look on his face, one that I've never seen before.

Matt > It's okay, Lucille. I think I know someone who can help you.

I raise an eyebrow, a little surprised.

> Really?

Matt > Yes. I'm not happy about it, but... I think my brother, Daryl, can help you.
