This guy needs a chill pill! I'm going to calm him down.
> Woah! Relax!
Daryl > Well, I don't have any time to waste, so goodbye!
I quickly answer him before he hangs up.
> It's the girl from this morning. Remember the one you almost ran over?
A short silence follows my answer. I don't know if he's thinking or if he hang up.
Daryl > The chick from this morning. I never expected that.
His voice has changed. More cheesy, more... seductive. Matt's warning comes to mind, but I put it aside for now. I have other priorities!
Daryl > You missed me too much, did you?
I think for a second about how I should answer him. My goal being to loosen him up, I can see nly one possible choice.
> Well, of course! A machine like yours... is not easily forgotten.
He starts laughing. And that laugh... Mamma mia, it's unsettling.
Daryl > Well played, sweetheart. But seriously, why are you calling me at 3:00 in the morning? Is it cold in your bed?
What?! He makes me blush. I decide to play his game since it's in my interest.
> Mmm, I'm not very warm in my little nightie, but what the heck. Life's tough for single people in New York!
Daryl > It could be improved, you know.
I bite my lip, embarrassed. Maybe I overdid it a little! Cacao comes back and snuggles up to me, and I start petting him nervously.
Daryl > I've been thinking about you a lot today.
Oh, yeah? I'm a little surprised. I didn't expect him to tell me that. I smile and joke with him.
> Oh, yeah? Did you finally decide it was high time you stopped being a public menace?
Again, his laughter, fresh and bright, doesn't really match the self-centered, macho image he displays. What's he playing at?
Daryl > I was thinking that a girl like you, who knows so much about beautiful things... is quite rare. And I particularly appreciate anything rare.
What's he trying to do now? Just as I'm thinking about hanging up, he makes a proposition.
Daryl > Are you free tomorrow night?
I raise my eyebrows and smile stupidly. He knows what he wants! Given Matt's warning, I'm not too excited about the idea, but I jump at the chance. This is the perfect opportunity to get closer to the beast.
> Maybe... what do you suggest?
Daryl > A one-on-one dinner with my machine nearby. Just to talk horsepower, shall I pick you up?
I seize the opportunity while I can.
> With pleasure. Let's say... 6:00 p.m. same place as this morning. Where it all began.
Daryl > I can't wait, see you tomorrow, sweetheart.
To say that I had a good night's sleep would be a lie. I kept tossing and turning and pounding my pillow, annoyed. As much as I love my little brother, I can't help but be angry with him for getting into such a mess! I can't believe I'm planning a robbery! I'm completely insane, but that doesn't make it any easier. I go to work, more distracted than ever, hoping not to let anything slip in front of Matt. It he finds out I'm going to see his brother tonight, the brother he warned me against, he'll be really mad at me. Worse still: if he finds out that I'm about to steal his brother's car. I wonder if I'm going to get Matt into trouble by doing this? What if Daryl can trace it back to me? One thing's for sure, I'd better not make any mistakes! I'll have to change my cell number. I'll do that tomorrow! As soon as I deliver the car to this Maccini guy. After that, I'm gonna get out of New York... Never mind the job! I'm taking Jason with me. Away from his fake friends, away from all this shit! We're going to start over. Just thinking about what this all means, I feel sick to my stomach. But it's for Jason. So that he can finally live in peace! I try to get on with my work, but as the hours tick by, I start to get nervous. I leave the office early so I have time to go home and walk Cacao. Then I get ready.
