Lilo’s POV

“Well, you’ve met Maxi.” Kerrbox said, trying to introduce us to the lifeguards but they just kept disappearing. I chuckled to myself a bit. Hopefully it wasn’t always this hectic. A tallish tanned man with a mop of brown hair came up to us.

“Hiya. Bruce Hopkins. Hoppo to everyone here.” His handshake was firm and he meant business.

“Lilo.” I introduced. He nodded.

“Adriel.” The tower was pretty cool. It was a round room, half of the walls were made of windows, the other had posters, calendars and a cork board. There was a medical area, with the defib, and first aid kit, accompanied by a bed.

“Well, I am chief around here, so ask me anything.” Hoppo smiled at me whilst I was looking around in awe.

“Sorry. Just I don’t know…” I trailed off not really being able to put my feelings in to words.

“Shall we get you started?” Adriel and I nodded in sync. “Ok, Lilo, we are gunna put you with Tom, to show you the ropes.” A guy around my height came up the stairs, leaning on the rail he saluted. He had brownish hair and was a good looking guy. I nodded in acknowledgment. Tom, that’s who Mouse mentioned in the van.  Tom looked like a nice guy and easy to get along with.  “Adriel…” Hoppo thought about it for a second. “I am going to put you with Maxi.” Tom sniggered.

“Bruce Maxi? Really?” Maxi just smiled, which made me laugh.

“Well, I did consider my options but still. Maxi behave and teach Adriel the ropes.” Maxi nodded then led Adriel out and down the stairs. I nodded them a goodbye.

“What’s so bad about Maxi?” I asked, probably knowing the answer.

“He still needs to grow up a bit.” Tom stated. Smiling, I walked over to where Tom was.

“Where shall we start?” I questioned, leaning on the rail as well. Tom pushed off the rail and beckoned me to follow him with his hand. I fell in to step with him as we walked out on to the sand and made our way under the tower.

“You a trainee or what?” I shook my head and followed Tom. There were quad bikes, jet skis, the lifeguard boards and the flags and signs.

“Na, I left school at sixteen…”

“Oh like Maxi. Sorry.” Tom interrupted. I smiled and helped him connect a trailer thing full of the flags and signs on to a quad bike.

“Trained for three years got all the qualifications. But Queensland wasn’t the most extremely busy place in the world. So Mouse got me in to the trials and I guess I am now a proper lifeguard.” I explained, then followed Tom on to the quad bike.

“Tell me about you. We have nicknames here so yeah, need to think of yours.”

“Oh right. Well my favourite movie is Lilo and Stitch, I still love Disney, urmm my favourite colour is red.” I said just before Tom started the bike up. Holding on, I thought about how my dad was getting on. All alone in his flat, with his two kids out in the big wide world.

“Awesome, might have enough. Could you grab the red and yellow flag please?” Tom asked, jumping off the bike. I nodded and did as he said.

After we took out all the flags and shizz, Tom took me back to the tower.

“So basically up until my lunch break I am up here. You’ll be with me all day.” I nodded. The beach in Queensland only had a couple of 100 a day. I had my work cut out. Mouse had a day off today. And I had no food. So put the two together, et voila! I will have food and a hard working brother. Before I sat down I quickly begged Mouse to go do my shopping, by texting him.

“Ok, are you sure Adriel’s gunna be ok with Maxi?” I asked, smiling at Tom. He let out a small chuckle. I took my seat by the windowed wall and was given a pair of binoculars and a walkie talkie.

“Maybe-“Tom started. Then another lifeguard walked in. He was small, with slightly spiked hair, light brown, with long eyelashes.  “Hey Troy!” The guy looked at Tom surprised. Guess he’s called Troy. “Could you go with Maxi? We have a new guy and Hoppo put him with Maxi.” Troy laughed.

“Yeah sure! Who’s this?” My gaze went from the water to Troy. I found him pointing at me.

“Lilo.” I introduced, sticking my hand out for him to shake. Tom’s eyes were back on the water.

“Troy.” He flashed a charming smile then left to go find Maxi and Adriel. I think I will be fine here. I was already enjoying it and I had only just started.

“So just keep your eyes on the water, radio to the guy nearest and they’ll sort it out. They will sometimes call for an ambo, so you’ll need to sort that out.” I nodded in understanding.

“What are we doing after lunch then?” My eyes were fixed on the water. It was about half seven and already the beach was beginning to fill up.

“We’ll be down south.” I nodded, ok. “Have you used the boards before?” Tom asked.

“Yeh, but I have a feeling yours are bigger.”

“Sweet, you could have your first rescue today!” I squealed with excitement, Tom laughed. Today was supposed to be extremely hot. I guessed the way things were going it was going to be a busy one. Woo! Inside me my stomach was going crazy. Gahh! I really was excited.

“Heya Lilo!” A familiar voice chirped from behind me. It was Dunno.

“Hey Dunno! Busy!” I simply stated. Smiling slightly. Dunno let out his quite adorable laugh.

“Ok, I’ll be down at backpackers if you need me.” I waved him, my eyes still focused on the water. Someone seemed to be making no headway against a rip. I started to make monkey noises. Well sorta, it was only because I had spotted someone and my excitement was over the top.

“You found someone then?” Tom asked. I nodded and pointed the guy out. “Good radio Dunno!” I smiled, putting the binoculars down and picking up the radio.

“Dunno there is a guy, few metres from the rocks. Think you should go in.” I radioed. Tom high-fived me. I had most probably saved a guy’s life.

“OK be on standby.” My eyes were back on the water. Today was most probably going to be a  busy one.
