"It's not there." John B sighed after watching Pope explore the Royal Merchant wreck for a few minutes. "Look, just- just pull the drone up."

"Shit." Kal cursed.

"Look, we can do another pass." Pope offered. "Recharge the battery. We can- we can go back down."

John B ran his hand stressfully through his hair as he walked towards the back of the boat.

"Guys! We've done it three times." JJ called out from the Cockpit, turning around to look at his friends. "There's nothing there-"

"Shut up!" Kie yelled at him. She wanted nothing more than to upset John B further but deep down she knew JJ was right.

"What?" JJ rolled his eyes. "It's true!"

"The gold could be buried." Kie tried to reason with him. "We don't know."

"If it was there, it would've been found on the metal detector, okay?" John B spoke up as he walked back towards his friends. "Somebody beat us to it."

"Or it was never there," JJ mumbled as he turned his head back forwards.

Kal and Kie started to reel in the tether back in as JJ kept the boat idling, allowing John B to brood in a corner over his disappointment. Kal sighed in frustration about not finding the Royal Merchant gold as thunder rumbled overhead. She looked up to see a dark cloud forming above them, luckily the two girls had just finished pulling the tether up so the five were ready to get out of there. JJ quickly turned the boat around and lead the five out of the vicious waters and back

to land.

The day was hot and the sun was beating down on the Outer Banks. John B was probably off sulking about not finding the Royal Merchant gold, Pope had to work on his essay, Kie had a shift at the wreck, JJ was off doing something and Kal was home alone. Home alone in a three-story house with nothing to do. She sighed as she walked toward her window and looked out onto her yard. Compared to her neighbors, her yard was still a mess. All the down trees were gone but the flower beds were messy, the lawn needed to be mowed and the stone patio needed to be cleaned of debris.

"Looks I know what I'm gonna do," Kal mumbled to herself. She changed into a pair of old jean shorts and a bikini top, knowing that she wanted to fix her tan lines before Midsummers.

Midsummer's was one of the major Kook Summer events, anyone who was anyone was going to be there. Kal had to attend because if her parents found out that she had skipped it, it would be the end of her time in OBX. Her parents were not going to come home from where ever they were to attend so that meant Kal had to go in their place. She had to chat up all the other rich Kooks and make sure the Davis name was still a reputable and renowned family.

The pre-Pogue Kal would have never done yard work. Her life before meeting JJ and the others was very bubble wrapped or like looking through a glass window at reality but never having to experience. She thought that she wasn't going to enjoy yard work very much but she ended up not totally hating it. It was almost relaxing.

"It's very different without Mrs. Evans here to greet me." A new voice suddenly said, startling Kal. She used her hand to block the sun as she saw JJ walking out of her house and out onto the patio.

"What are you doing here?" Kal asked as she got up from her spot next to one of the flower beds.

"The real question is what are you doing?" JJ asked, clearly confused and surprised at the sight of Kal.

"You mean, yard work?"

"Yeah, I didn't think you Kooks knew how to do that." JJ laughed.

"You know you could help right? The lawn needs to be mowed." Kal joked as they walked towards each other.
