Andy's POV
I was five months pregnant today and have an ultrasound later today. Robert and I agreed to not find out the gender. Today the guys are on shift so I don't have someone to go with me. I haven't grown much since we first announced my pregnancy and am a little worried about that. I was small for five months pregnant and it worried me that the baby was not growing correctly. I got up and grabbed some breakfast. My appointment was in an hour so I had to get dressed quickly and get in the car. When I got to the hospital I checked in and waited for the nurse to come and get me. They did some blood work and then Carina came in and asked me some questions.
Carina: How are you Andy?
Andy: I'm good.
Carina: Are you still having morning sickness?
Andy: Not really. I get nauseous sometimes, but I haven't puked for a while.
Carina: Are you still taking you prenatal vitamins?
Andy: Yep every morning.
Carina: Do you have any questions before we start the ultrasound?
Andy: No.
Carina: Okay let's take a look at this baby. Do you want to know the sex.
Andy: No.
Carina placed the cold gel on my stomach and started the machine. I saw her face go from happy too sad and that scared me.
Andy: Is everything okay?
Carina: Yeah I am just seeing some bands around the baby's legs.
Andy: What does that mean?
Carina: There are bands of amniotic tissue around the babies feet. They might cause the baby's legs to stop growing and eventually fall off.
Andy: What do we do?
Carina: We can do fetal surgery to have them cut or we can wait till he or she is born and cut them off then.
Andy: What gives the baby a better chance of keeping all its limbs?
Carina: If we do fetal surgery it takes the bands out of the picture completely.
Andy: Do I need to decide today?
Carina: No you should go home and talk this over with your husband, but for know would you like to hear the heart beat?
Andy: Yeah.
She turned the sound on and it brought tears to my eyes. She gave me the photos from the ultrasound and then talked to me some more.
Carina: I should have your bloodwork back tomorrow and I will call you with the results. I want to monitor the bands pretty closely so I want to see you in a week. If you guys decide to do the surgery call me and we can schedule an appointment with a fetal surgeon.
Andy: Okay. Thanks Carina.
I went back to the car and cried. It was hard finding out that news, but having to tell Robert was even harder. I decided to not wait any longer and went to the station to tell him the news. I wiped my tears before I went in and put on a smile to hide the fact that I was devastated. Travis was working the desk since I took the day off and I talked to him for a brief moment.
Travis: Andy I didn't know you were coming in today?
Andy: Um yeah. Is Robert in his office?
Travis: He is in the beanery talking with some of his old LA bodies.
Andy: Thanks.
I walked up the stairs carefully and made sure to breath before walking in there. I went to the fridge and got a glass of water before I got bombarded with questions from Maya.
Maya: How did it go?
Andy: It was great.
Maya: Do you have pictures?
Andy: Yeah.
I showed Maya the pictures and then I walked over to Robert.
Andy: Here is the picture for you office. I am going to go take a nap.
I walked out of the beanery and into his office to lay down.
Maya's POV
Andy didn't seem the same today in the beanery. She was not as excited as she normally is. I was thinking about what got her sad, but was interrupted by a text from Carina.
Carina: Hey go easy on Andy today it was a rough one.
I was confused, but went to see her anyways. I knocked on the chief's office and listened for Andy. She was crying a little, but quietly.
Maya: Andy open the door.
Andy opened the door and she had dried tears running down her cheeks.
Maya: What's wrong?
She didn't say anything she just hugged me so hard. I stepped inside the office and sat her down on the couch. She laid her head in my lap and I let her cry until she couldn't anymore.
Maya: Andy what is wrong with the baby?
