'Who was that?' grandma asked as I returned to the breakfast table.
'You know the rich family that just moved in? Yeah it was the uh son. He wanted to buy fruits and eggs.'
They both pulled quizzical looks and continued talking while I began spooning Rhiannon's food into her mouth. The whole time I thought about Michael, his deep voice, amazing eyes and dark hair. He had this kind look on his face that spelled innocence and I loved it.
I helped mum clear up the plates and do the washing up while she talked to grandma in low tones. She came back from her room and flashed a small smile.
'What's up baby?'
'What were you talking about?' I kept my eyes on the plate I scrubbed and listened to the silence fill up the room.
'It's grown up stuff baby.'
'I'm fifteen, you told me yourself that I was the new woman of the house and I was amazing at it.'
'I know hon, but I don't want to say anything that's gonna sway you; I need you right now more than anything.'
'I can't help you with anything unless you tell me stuff mum, we agreed; no secrets.'
She sighed and ran a hand through her hair.
'You are still fifteen okay? You are my baby and I'm gon' do everything to protect you.'
'Thanks mum,' I mumbled through gritted teeth.
She watched me as I carefully ran a dry cloth over the plate.
'You know you're so much like you're dad; he used to take control of every situation and he'd make everything better.'
I slammed the plate hard onto the stack and watched her jump back in shock. 'So where is he?'
She drew in a sharp breath and said nothing. I shook my head and wiped my hands against the hand towel.
'You know what? I got work so.'
I left her in the kitchen and fetched some tools from the shed. The sun was warming up the eart now and a truck had driven up our neighbours' drive. Members of the family (two parents, two children one girl one boy) walked up and down transporting several items. I stared for a minute or two before moving to our patch of vegetables; I hated days like this.
