My lips curl into a frown as I take in the dark, crowded bar. I fidget with the ties on my blouse, feeling awkward and out of place. I haven't stepped foot in a bar in years, for good reason. They weren't really my scene. But, peer pressure makes me do crazy things, like having an impromptu girls night on a random Friday night after work.
I raise a brow at Amber as she hikes up her skirt a couple inches, further accentuating her long, tan legs. She catches me staring and smirks. "Jealous?"
I shake my head, laughing as Nadia answers for me.
"Very," she says, taking her long brown hair out of it's braid. It cascades in waves down her back as she runs her hands through it.
"I hate you both," I say as I fluff out my hair, growing increasingly more self conscious by the minute.
My friends are beautiful, successful single women. They thrive in environments like these, I on the other hand do not.
"You won't be saying that after we get a couple martinis in you," Amber says, hooking Nadia and I around the arms. I gasp as she pulls me further into the bulk of the crowd, closer to the bar.
Questionable outfits and poor decisions aside, this outing doesn't seem like it'll be all that bad. If I'm being honest, I deserve a break from my everyday life, and I'd be doing myself a disservice if I didn't treat myself tonight.
So, when the bartender sets a shot glass down in front of me, I take it without a second thought. Tonight, I'll live in the moment, and worry about the consequences later.

As the night goes on and the drinks start to hit me, a sense of euphoria settles upon my mind. I'm carefree and smiling and I'm having the most fun I've had in a long time. After dancing to the point of sweaty exhaustion, Nadia, Amber and I take a seat at the bar once more.
"I'm glad we did this," I say, kicking my feet as I happily take a sip of my cocktail. The fruity concoction settles upon my tastebuds with a satisfying aftertaste, the perfect aphrodisiac.
"Yeah me too," Nadia agrees, flipping her hair to the side as the leans against the bar to meet my eyes.
Amber slaps the table as she swallows the liquid in her mouth. "We should do this every Friday!"
"Yes," I agree, throwing my head back and closing my eyes as I listen to the music playing overhead. I'm not familiar with the song, but the beat alone is enough for me to not even care about the words.
Feeling light and airy, I take a sip of my drink as Nadia begins telling a story. My attention wanes and my eyes flick around the bar as I take in the crowd once more. People gather in the center and dance to the music on the small dance floor, while others sit at tables and mingle. A smile settles upon my face as I glance at the entrance. It immediately falls from my face when a pair of intense blue eyes settle upon me.
