Josie's POV -
I started at the raven-haired girl seated beside me in disbelief. I had so many questions and honestly could barely contain an outbreak. I collected my thoughts and timidly formulated a question.
"Why does it matter?" I asked.
Her eyes glossed over and she looked up. She was picking at her nail polish, something that she always did when she felt uneasy. I suddenly regretted saying what I did, but I didn't try to make things better. I just kept quiet and waited for a reply.
"Jo..." She managed to croak out in a near-silent whisper. "I love you... a-and I wanna b-be with you... okay?" she continued.
I bit down on my lip hard. I could feel the blood as I licked my lips. I turned my gaze to the teary-eyed girl. The tears that were threatening to spill broke my heart.
"That's why it matters..." she finished.
"I-I'm sorry," I answered, trying to think of what to say.
"I didn't know what I was doing. I couldn't think about never seeing you again for another second and I-" I paused, she was crying, and it was my fault.
I took a deep breath and pulled her in for a tight hug. She didn't resist, but she did tense up. My heart was pounding in my chest and my breaths became shakey. I didn't know what to say or do. We stayed like that for a while, she eventually relaxed and hugged me back. I slid under the covers and Penelope followed suit. I pulled her as close to me as I could and kissed the top of her head. We remained quiet. The silence was relaxing, but we had a lot to talk about so I decided to say something.
"I love you too."
It came out as more of a whisper, but I could tell she heard me. I turned to look at her. She sniffled a bit and wiped at the tears that were still on her cheeks from moments before. She smiled a bit but said nothing. I didn't know what else to say. The silence was intimidating, and if she would only look at me she would see how my eyes were pleading her to say something.
"A-and I wanna be with you, I'm so sorry for everything..." I stammered a bit, but then gained confidence in my speech.
"You are so annoying," the shorter girl beside me chuckled between sniffles.
"Yeah..." I replied with a soft smile, "but you know you love it."
"Can't argue with that," she laughed some more.
It felt like the good old times. It felt like it did back when we first got together when our relationship was only giggles and laughs. She turned over to look at me. Her eyes glistened. I missed staring into her beautiful eyes. I missed being this close to her. I missed feeling her breath on my skin. I missed her. Now she was back, and hopefully, she would be mine.
She brushed a strand of my hair behind my ear and cupped my cheek. She traced circles on my skin with her thumb and her gaze shifted to my lips. I wanted to kiss her so badly, but I was scared she would pull away. I sighed deeply and squeezed my eyes shut as if taking in the experience with all my other senses. The smell of her perfume hit me like a brick. It was stronger now that I was focusing on it, and I loved it. The feeling of her hand on my face sent shivers down my spine. I had longed for a moment like this ever since we broke up.
I opened my eyes again and was greeted by her beaming smile. She was gorgeous.
"Wow Saltzman, didn't I was that boring," she snickered attempting to keep a serious expression on her face.
I smiled in reply.
"You tired?" she questioned, raising an eyebrow.
I slowly nodded in reply, and then bit my lip.
"I'm fine, we have a lot to talk about, I can catch up on my sleep some other time..." I finally spoke doing my best to contain a yawn.
"You're funny Jos," She said with a smirk as she pulled my closer to her.
"It's okay I'm exhausted too," she whispered as I moved to rest my head on her chest.
"I guess we could take a brief nap..." was the last thing I said before we both drifted off to sleep.
