Chapter 3 -- I Just Can't

The pain came to me when I saw his familiar brown eyes. He didn't looked surprise when he saw me. I was but it hurts when the images of him saying, "I'm sorry," played over and over again in my mind. But it was soon covered by rage. He just left without explanation. What is he doing here now?

I put on my poker face and raised my chin, don't look at him. Don't you dare look at him! Get your act together Lyna!!! Oh no, he kept staring!!!!!!!

"Dr. Evlan, you're mom's here and she bought a lot of things." Maria said breaking my thoughts. Great, my mom's gonna be pissed when she sees him.

"I'll be right there." I said. I couldn't focus on anything but his gaze on me. NO! He doesn't deserve my attention. Not after what he did.

"If you excuse me, I'll be right back." I avoided him and walked to the door but a hand stopped me.

"Lyna.." His soft voice called out to me. Don't break Lyna. Don't break.

"It's Dr. Evlan." I pushed his hand away from mine and walked away. Just like he did to me.

My steps felt heavier, and all the feelings inside that had been crumpled into small pieces started to open up, leaving me overwhelmed with emotion. I need to control it before I see my mom. She can always see through me. But not this time. I won't let her.

"Mom." I breathed out, entering my office. I hugged her tightly, needing her support.

"Wow wow wow, what is this? Christmas? You only hug me like that on Christmas and the last time I checked, Christmas is still months away." She broke the hug and looked at me. "What's wrong?"

Yeah, I'm really bad at this. I can never hide from my mom. That's why she's my mom. "Mom. Mom. Mom." I said softly. I couldn't bring myself to tell her that he's here. After nine years. Nine years.

"Mom, I need you." My eyes started to teared up. "Mom."

"Oh hush now. That's why I'm here. Call it a mother's intuition." She went back to hugging me. "Alright, honey. Tell mom what's wrong? I can't just see you like this."

I swallowed and tried to calm myself down with the smell of my mom's soft aroma. "He's here, mom. Why is he here?"

"Who's here?" She asked, patting me on my back. "Don't tell me it's that Gargakos kid."

"Mom."

"It's him, isn't it? Where is he? Let me talk to that boy. That son of a bitch! He needs to be taught a lesson." My mom said with rage. She sure hated him after that night. After he left, I ran after him. Then the car came.

"Mom, I don't know what to do. What am I gonna say to him?" I pleaded her for an answer. I felt like my knees were about to buckle down.

"Honey, listen to me. You're a strong woman. Just be professional and tell him that you don't want to talk about anything else but work. You're the doctor and he's the patient's family. Done." She said patting my back. "You got this. If he tries anything else, then do something. I didn't put you in karate class since you were four for nothing."

I'm so glad I have my mom. She's the best. "Mom, I love you."

"I know. How 'bout I leave you to it?" She asked, grabbing her bag.

"Okay, bye." And she walked out without even asking me for the key that she needed. I knew it. She has her keys. She just came to see me and I'm glad she did.

Am I ready to talk to him again? What if I buckled down and start to tear up? What if...

"It's been a while, Lyna." His velvety voice called out to from the door.
