As the afternoon sun cast a warm glow into the room, Ember slowly stirred from her slumber. The remnants of her weariness clung to her, but she felt a renewed sense of calm and clarity. As she opened her eyes, she noticed the familiar figure of Abigail seated by her bedside, a gentle smile on her face.

"Abigail," Ember's voice carried a mixture of surprise and gratitude. "You're here."

Abigail's eyes sparkled with warmth as she reached out to hold Ember's hand. "Of course, my dear friend. Marie informed me that you were feeling unwell, and I wanted to be here for you."

Ember's heart swelled with appreciation for her loyal friend. "Thank you, Abigail. It feels comforting to have you by my side."

Abigail nodded, her expression filled with empathy. "I understand that you've been through quite a difficult time lately."

"Indeed, Abigail."

Sitting together in Ember's cozy sitting room, Abigail leaned forward, her eyes filled with curiosity and concern. "Elora, I hope you don't mind me asking, but I'm curious about how your conversation with Alexander went last night at the ball. Did you manage to speak with him?"

Ember sighed softly, her gaze drifting to a distant point as she gathered her thoughts. The memories of that conversation still weighed heavy on her heart. "Yes, Abigail, I did speak with him. However, it wasn't the reunion I had hoped for. Alexander was distant and cold, almost as if I were a stranger to him."

Abigail's brows furrowed, a mix of confusion and concern evident on her face. "That's disheartening, Elora. I had thought that perhaps seeing you again would rekindle his affection and bring back the connection you once shared. Do you have any idea why he reacted that way?"

Ember shrugged, a hint of sadness in her voice. "I wish I had the answers, Abigail. He mentioned that there were complications and that things had changed. It seemed as though he wanted to keep his distance from me, and I couldn't understand why."

Abigail reached out to clasp Ember's hand, offering her comfort. "I'm sorry, Elora. It must have been incredibly difficult to hear those words from someone you once held so dear. But please remember that his actions and feelings are his own, and they do not define your worth or who you are."

Ember nodded, her gaze meeting Abigail's with gratitude. "Thank you, Abigail. But I can't help feeling a sense of loss, both for the memories I've lost and for the connection I once had with Alexander."

Abigail squeezed Ember's hand gently, her voice filled with compassion. "It's natural to grieve, Elora. Give yourself the time and space to process your emotions. Remember that you are not defined by your past or by your connection with Alexander. You have a bright future ahead, filled with infinite possibilities."

Ember nodded, her heart feeling lighter as she embraced Abigail's words of encouragement.

"So, I assume your conversation with Alexander didn't end well last night. Is that why you left the ball without a word?"

Ember sighed softly, her gaze turning towards Abigail as she contemplated her response. She appreciated Abigail's genuine concern and knew that she couldn't keep her friend in the dark.

"Abigail, I apologize for leaving abruptly without explaining myself. The truth is, the emotions were overwhelming for me. Seeing Alexander with that woman, the one who clung onto him so possessively, it stirred up feelings of hurt and confusion within me. It became too much to bear. I needed a moment alone to collect myself."
