Exhaustion made most of Jem's giddiness fade.
By the end of training Jem was sweating and breathing heavy. It was days like this, when the sun was beating down on the pitch and there didn't seem to be enough cold water in the world that she really envied the boys. Half the team were finishing the session with no jerseys, her cheeks flaming at the fact that Brett was included.
She was thankful her face was already red from the heat alone. However, another feeling was added to the mix of excitement and tiredness when she spotted two teenagers at the end of the bleachers. They weren't hard to miss, sorely lacking in grey blazers and purple vests.
Jem glanced behind her, most of the team thankfully not having noticed the other two. She knew most of the guys wouldn't take too kindly to seeing Liam Dunbar on their home territory uninvited. He hadn't exactly left this school on the best of terms, especially with his team mates. Brett however had noticed.
Jem pressed her lips together. The rest of the team headed in to the locker room but she and Brett made their way to meet Liam and Mason, an uneasy feeling between them. Liam showing up here of all places couldn't mean anything good. She realised with a start that she hadn't even looked at her phone since she left the house this morning the day had been so busy. Anything could have happened.
"I tried to call" Liam sighed. He looked just as unhappy to be here as any of the lacrosse team would be to see him. Mason on the other hand looked like he'd just unwrapped a golden ticket. She guessed he was pretty much up to speed then. She only realised a few seconds later that the reason he had such a glint in his eye was because he was checking out her shirtless boyfriend.
She shook it off. Surely he wouldn't go there, right? "Sorry" she admitted, gesturing to her gym gear. "we had training"
"I know, it's fine. It's nothing too serious" Jem felt a little easier, sitting down on one of the higher bleachers still trying to even her breaths as Brett started rooting through his bag. "Anyway, we didn't come to see you"
Her mouth parted in surprise and confusion, then realisation. "I think your service is required" She nudged Brett's shoulder, interrupting him from drowning himself in his own bottle of water. He raised an eyebrow without any comment. Jem knew he didn't mean to be rude as such. He was stand offish with Liam, he always had been. The pair hadn't got on when they played together and now that they were on rival teams, it didn't exactly benefit the situation.
Even so she shot him a look, willing him to be patient. He sighed, but put down his bottle anyway. "What can I do?"
Liam set the scene while Mason scrolled through his camera roll, beaming as if he were the robin to Liam's batman right now. "We found Tracey. Scott has her at the animal clinic so Deaton can do a few tests. We're not completely sure of anything but she's definitely not human"
Mason held up the phone screen for Brett to look at and Jem finally understood what was going on. They wanted to know if she was a werewolf, specifically one changed by Satomi.
"Cute-" Brett glanced in Jem's direction with a smirk to let her know he was joking. She stuck out her tongue anyway. "-But I've never seen her before" He went back to packing his gear up again. Jem took a final look at Tracey's yearbook photo before Liam took the phone off Mason again.
"Could Satomi have turned her without you knowing?" Liam asked, though Jem figured they both already knew the answer. You couldn't just build up members without the rest of the pack knowing about it.
"After the dead pool, Satomi's not exactly doing much recruiting"
Liam hung his head. He'd obviously been hoping Brett could have helped figure it out. He wouldn't have come here for help unless it was the last idea he could think of. There were no other alphas in Beacon Hills that they knew of, so if Tracey really was a werewolf then where was the rest of her pack?
