"Unlike most girls, she was headstrong and tough willed, hardly ever lost an argument. However, what astounded me was just how affectionate she was. She was warm-hearted and cared very deeply about others, unlike me at the time. "
10 YEARS AGO:
"Hey, are you okay?" Chrissy yelled as we ran towards the nearby playground.
The scream from earlier came from a small boy, sitting down in the sand, below some monkey bars.
"My leg, it hurts." The boy whimpered, as he wiped his tears with his small forearms.
Great, two injured children in one week.
Chrissy squatted, proceeding to touch his frail, bleeding leg. She opened her bag and took out her water bottle.
"This is going to sting a little." She said with a smile as she poured some water on the wound without any warning.
What is wrong with you woman? You could've counted him down or something.
"OWWWWWWW!" The boy shrieked, clutching the sand on the ground tightly.
Chrissy reached into her back pocket and pulled out a handkerchief.
It was striped and coloured pastel green.
Wow. This girl's got good taste for handkerchiefs. It's a good colour.
Yo, it looks soft and it has...
WAIT A MINUTE.
That's my handkerchief!
She tied the wound with the soft, clean handkerchief and gently said,
"All done. Can you stand?"
The boy stood up nodded up and down. His eyes darted around suspiciously, and I noticed he never kept eye contact with Chrissy the whole time.
Something's up.
"Hey kid! You alright?" I said in a clear booming voice.
I clearly shocked him as he jumped slightly.
"I'm fine um but I'm sorry." The kid said nervously.
"It's fine, you only used her time and effort. I didn't do anything." I said with a straight face as Chrissy stared at me, clearly pissed off.
"No, not to you, to her." He replied.
Chrissy shifted her gaze from me to him and calmly said
"It's fine, I'm happy to help."
The boy looked at her for the first time and said,
"No, that's not it. I'm sorry about the other time."
Now I'm curious.
"Chrissy, how many times have you helped this kid?" I asked.
Furrowing her eyebrows, Chrissy said in an unsure voice
"Um, only this once."
I could tell from her face that she too was perplexed.
