suna gently pet kita's cat, watching the tip of her fluffy tail lazily flick against the porch floor.

it was about 6 in the evening, a pleasant breeze blowing past and rustling through the trees nearby.

suna had been at kita's house for about 4 hours, since kita drove by suna's house to pick him up after they had both finished work.

during those four hours, kita and him had had a small snack and caught up, asking and telling about things like grades, careers, volleyball and what-not.

kita's cat kedama, a fluffy black cat with bright, half-lidded yellow eyes, sat next to suna, enjoying the sunlight.

"hey, suna?" kita called from inside where he was making tea, "how long are you staying?"

suna paused before replying, "i don't know...can i stay the night?" he cast a shy glance into the apartment, locking eyes with kita.

almost immediately kita replied with enthusiasm,

"oh, yeah, sure!" he flashed him a small, innocent smile. "i don't know if we'll meet again before you leave, so...why not?"

"thanks." suna turned back around, mindlessly scrolling through social media, his fingers catching on the freshly broken glass. he was gonna have to pay for a new screen, thanks to his dad, who had thrown it into the wall where it shattered.

aside from that, his heart was wildly throbbing in his chest. he was staying the night with kita! he was finally gonna get close to him…

he actually wasn’t sure why kita had invited him.

yeah, sure, they were friends in highschool. but they hadn’t contacted eachother since kita graduated, about a year ago. and yet here suna was: in kita’s house, sitting on the balcony, and with plans to stay the night.

kita who was an actual adult...who owned a car and an apartment and supported himself with a job… suna admired it all, and although the thought was daunting, he felt excited to move into the same life style...without his parents.

suna felt a jolt run through his body as kita sat down next to him, pressing his hand into his shoulder gently.

suna looked over with an awknoledging glance, before turning his attention back to his phone screen.

kita didn’t look much different from highschool, just more mature. but still, his looks were easily admirable, just as they were a year ago, and suna often found himself stealing looks at him, or embarassingly staring for too long.

“oh,” kita said softly, “what happened to your phone screen?”

suna stayed quiet, his shoulder blades gently throbbing as he remembered his father slamming him into the wall. he shrugged, mumbling,

“i don’t know…”

out of the corner of his eye he watched kita raise his eyebrows skeptically.

“suna…” his voice was soft, with only a hint of austerity.

suna loved being able to talk with someone without the threat of violence or misunderstanding. it was such a relief. the last four hours with kita had lifted a weight off his shoulders he hadn’t known he was carrying.

kita didn’t judge him, and he was kind, not biased or jaded or angry.

suna looked at him, scowling.

he realized he must have given a hint that something was wrong, whether that was nervously covering the screen of his phone, or shrinking into himself in some way.

“i had some trouble with my dad last night, is all.” he replied with feigned indifference. “I also met up with osamu last night, for some reason.”

kita tilted his head, quietly contemplating suna’s words.

suna looked away from him and instead drew patterns into kedama’s soft fur in an attempt to calm the anxiety stirring up in his chest.

“that’s rough.” kita murmured.

“yeah,” suna paused, taking his eyes off kedama and momentarily locking gazes with kita. “besides that...osamu still has feelings for me.”

“oh?”

suna set his phone down, pulling his knees close to his chest and resting his head on them.

“he said he loves me. and he wouldn’t stop texting me all night.” his chest tightened at the memory of osamu’s grip on his arm and his shy fingers wiping his tears away, all of which he had tried to push away with getting high.

“you know,”

suna looked over at him, frowning.

"you’re gonna have to forgive him at some point.”
