The only light in the dark living room is coming from the fireplace. We're in Tommy's house, trying to figure out what to do next. Tommy has his hands in his hair, still trying to grasp the fact that his brother is dead. Joel... is dead. Fuck! I smash my hand down on the table and get up from the chair I was sitting on. Y/N looks up from where she was sitting folds her hands together. "Ellie?" She stands up and walks closer to the fireplace, where Tommy is sitting in a leather armchair. She rests her hand on Tommy's shoulder, who looks up at me too. "Tommy, I'm so sorry I let this happen. I should've saved him." He gets up, walks over to me and pulls at my arm. Before I know it he has his hands wrapped around my shoulders. For a second I don't know what to do, I've never seen him this emotional. I quickly glance at Y/N, who raises her shoulders and her hands. "Tommy, do you remember where Joel lived?" He pulls back from me and scratches the back of his head. "Yeah, in Travis County, Texas." I glance over at Y/N and then back at Tommy. "We should go there and bury him near his house."  Tommy looks at me confused. "But that is almost a day worth of driving. And then we'd have to be lucky not to run into any groups or blocked off roads." I slump down on the couch defeated. "We could still try it? Right?" Y/N Speaks up. Her voice is slightly coarse from crying, but it's still strong as ever. Tommy sighs and sits down next to me. "Fine."

2 days later

"We were lucky that group let us in." Tommy says while looking back at the checkpoint we just went through. We could go through, on the condition that we would be escorted by another car. It's driving in front of us, leading us to Joel's old house. It's all very intense. If there's anything I've learned from my life, it's that random acts of kindness always come with a price. We come to a stop and I open the door. Joel's house still looks pretty good. "Is this it?" Y/N asks as she climbs out of the back of the truck. "Yeah." Tommy says as he steps closer to the front door. "Is anybody living in it?" I ask the people who escorted us here. "No, there's nobody in here." One of them answers. Tommy steps up to the front door and opens it. I follow him inside, while Y/N waits outside.

"Everything is the same." Tommy says after sitting down. "It's weird being here af er so long." Tommy and I wandered through the house for a bit, trying to find anything of Joel's. I found some pictures of him with Sarah. My heart hurt when I found them. Joel didn't deserve anything that happened to him. Tf here's a knock on the door and Y/N steps in. "They're ready."

Both Tommy and Y/N held my one hand during it all. It was just us and a priest, but he left as soon as he was finished. I let go of Tommy and Y/N's hands and kneeled down next to the grave. I fumbled through the pocket of my jacket and pulled out a picture. On it were Joel and Sarah. He looked so happy. I take a small stone from beside the grave and lay the picture down, the tone on top of it. A tear drops down my cheek.

"I never knew my father, until I met you. You were there for me when I needed you the most and even though we fought a lot, I loved you. And I will,  until my last breath." I rest my hand on the dirt. "Thank you, Without you, I probably wouldn't even be here." I take a deep breath and take my hand off his grave. "You cared for me like I was your own, and I couldn't be more grateful."

"Thank you."
