I came back to the lodging house. David ran over to me. "Jack's back!" He cheered.
"What do ya mean, David? He's a scabba!" I replied.
"No! He's back, and he needs us to help him." David said
"Wit what?" I asked.
"We're printing our own paper and we'll give 'em to all of the working kids in New York. Hopefully, they'll come for a rally tomorrow. We need to hand out the papes!" David said.
I stared at him. He could see I was thinking. I sighed and gave him a nod. He smiled and led me to the basement of the distribution center where Jack, Sarah, and Denton were setting up a printing press to print the papes.
The sun rose and shown through a small window in the basement. Jack, Denton, Sarah, David, and I have been working our butts off the whole night, and hopefully, our hard work payed off.
The newsies arrived at the window and began to pass out papes to all the working kids of New York. The only thing we could do is hope they will come tomorrow.
The Next Day
"Is anybody coming?" Kid Blink asked. I shook my head. This was hopeless.
"They ain't comin," Jack said. I looked down to my feet. All our hard work.
David's little brother, Les, stood up from his spot on the ground and began to sing, "When the circulation bell starts ringing, will we hear it?"
"Nah," Race replied, ruffling Les' hair. "What if the Delanceys come out swingin, will we hear it?"
"No!" Les replied back. I chuckled.
I heard a distant noise and the ground started to rumble. "When you got a million voices singing, who can hear a lousy whistle blow? And the world will know!!" All of the working kids in New York City came charging toward us. Our plan worked!!!
"BROOKLYN!!!" Yelled a familiar voice. I turned my head to the other side of the square. Spot rounded the corner with all of the working kids of Brooklyn following him. I smiled.
I sprinted over to Spot. I threw my arms around his neck and hugged him. He kissed my forehead and continued to lead his kids to the square.
Many people held signs that said 'STRIKE' while everybody was chanting it.
Seitz, Pulitzer's employee, exited the building and brought Jack and David inside.
Spot wrapped his arm around my waist. "Do ya think this'll woik?" He asked.
"It has ta." I replied. Spot kissed my forehead again. I smiled.
The doors to the large building opened and Jack and David walked out. Jack whispered something in Les' ear. Jack hoisted Les onto his shoulders and looked out to the large crowd of kids.
"WE BEAT 'EM!!!" Jack yelled. Everyone began cheering, including me and Spot. I turned to Spot and he turned to me. We gazed at each other's eyes for a moment, and then Spot's lips met mine. I felt many kids' looks at us, but I didn't care. I didn't care until Jack walked up to us.
He cleared his throat. I looked up at him and immediately pulled away. I looked to Spot. The King of Brooklyn actually looked nervous.
"Jack, I-" I started. Jack put his hand up in front of my face.
"If he makes ya happy, then fine. But if ya hurt me sista Spot, you will get a good soakin." Jack said. I cheered and hugged Jack tightly. He and Spot spit shook.
Crutchie, one of my closest friends, was brought out of the refuge. To all of the newsies' delight, Snyder was arrested.
"You shoulda seen it Jack! He comes in wavin his Walkin stick like a sword. He comes in wit an army a lawyers and cops-"
"Wait, who?" Jack asked.
"Ya friend! Teddy Roosevelt!" Crutchie replied. Jack and I looked over to the governor of New York. Our eyes were wide in surprise. Denton came up behind us.
"He was glad you brought this to his attention. He is happy to take you anywhere you want."
"Could he drop me off at the train yards?" Jack asked. I knew what he was doing. Santa Fe. I couldn't lose him again. I just got him back...
