there was a time when his little brother came home and we woke up early to go grocery shopping. he was so excited he almost forgot to get the keys and match his socks.

he scrambled through the ingredients and rapidly sent voice messages to his mom, asking one question after another about which one of two choices he should pick. i had to kiss him so he could keep still.

he smiled his gummy smile at me and pulled me in to hug him. this was at aisle fifteen.

while in line for check out, he pulled out a bouquet of stunning violets at the side and he had me to hold them.

i remember asking him what it was for.

he said, "when i die, bring these flowers. i like the way you look while holding them. totally my style."

we had a fight that night, i didn't like him joking about death.
