"So Harry, do you play any sports?" My mom asks right as we get to the table. I giggle to myself at her quickness to pry for information on my boyfriend.
"Yeah, I play football for school." He answered politely.
"He's the captain." I add with a proud smile. Harry looked over at me and smiled. Ah, I can never get enough of that grin.
"Impressive," my dad adds almost sarcastically.
Hoping Harry didn't notice my dad's annoying comment, I rested my hand on his knee under the table. He leaned back in his seat and rested his arm on the back of my chair, comforting me.
"Really impressive," I agree. "He's the best one on the team."
"We'll have to come out and watch you play sometime." My dad said after I have him a glare. Happy with his response, I smiled back at him and nodded.
"Yeah, that'd be great." Harry insisted.
As we ate, the conversation stayed light only consisting of classes, sports and my parents tried to push Harry for random details of his life.
Twenty minutes into our dinner, my cellphone began ringing. "Oops, sorry." I apologized and pulled it out of my pocket.
"Who is it?" Harry asked when I pressed a button to ignore it.
"Alicia. I call her back later."
"Oh yeah, why was Alicia here earlier?" My mom questioned.
"We were just hanging out." I shrugged.
"I like her, she's a good friend to you." My mom smiled. "And that Max too, I haven't seen him lately though."
Really mother? You had to bring him up?
Harry moved his arm from the back of my chair and subtly shifted to hold my hand under the table. I squeezed his hand in an assuring gesture.
"We're not really friends anymore." I said, hoping to ease Harry's tension.
"What? That's a shame, you two seemed like good friends!" She persisted, making me want to shove the bread on her plate in her throat to get her to shush.
"Yeah," was all I replied. I didn't really know what to say.
"Max was the blonde one right? The one I met?" My dad added in. I suddenly missed the brief conversation we had earlier about my lame life before we moved here.
"Yep." I sighed and moved the pasta around on my plate.
"He was a nice guy, had a good head on his shoulders." My dad said, making my subconscious scream. Harry shifted in his seat and took a big gulp of water from his glass.
I know it wasn't entirely too uncomfortable, but I felt the sudden need to comfort my boyfriend. I hated that my parents were talking so highly of Max, someone who has put a strain on Harry and I's relationship. Yeah, this conversation could have been ten times worse, but I still hated it.
"I'm staying with dad," I blurted out, silencing my parents side discussion on Max.
"Huh?"
"I've decided to stay here with dad when you move back." I looked to my mom. Harry's hand squeezed mine even tighter, and butterflies grew in my stomach.
I had made my decision earlier today, but I was waiting for the right time to tell everyone. I guess I felt this was the right time. . . I was hoping to show Harry I care about him and that I wanted to stay with him.
Even with a little sadness in her eyes, my mom looked glad that I came to a decision. "Then you can be with Harry," she smiled and I nodded before looking at him with a smile of my own. "You better come visit me over Christmas break though, missy!"
