Rue left him on read feeling a rumble of butterflies inside her stomach, her heart beating fast and skin getting sweaty. Rue knew, SHE knew that these are the symptoms on--

-having a crush.

The day ended fast, as much to Rue's dismay, her mind drifting to Alex's offer. She wanted to end the problem between them, and return to being friends already or start over.

Rue went to Stephania's diner and saw Alex standing there wearing his varsity jacket, she approached him and Alex noticed her presence, a small smile seen on Alex.

They went to the entrance and Alex opened the door for Rue that it flashed a memory that she wanted to cherish but wished that it didn't happen.

They sat on a table with two chairs, it was a cheap looking diner but the food is incredible, Alex called for the waitress and ordered their food.

A pregnant silence washed over them until Alex broke it.

“I know that we declared as of being best friends but why did you ignore me?”

“I was still processing it, Alex. It's not like everyday you receive a confession from your whole life best friend.”

Rue replied with such sass that Alex wondered where it came from.

“So I'm the one at fault here?”

“Ugh, I'm not saying that.”

“But it looks like you are.”

Rue was about to go put senseless at him but remembered that they were at a public place and calmed her nerves.

“It’s not that, I'm just shock, like why say it lately?”

“We're mature and thoughtful about stuff right now Rue, I thought that you'd understand.”

“Yeah.”

A sigh came out from Rue and lowered her head;

“Look, I'm sorry for reacting that way.”

Alex went silent for a minute, his thoughts lingered around Rue, he needed to move on and that's why he needed to admit his mistake too.

“I’m also sorry for liking you, my mind was too wrapped up about liking someone that I decided to like you.”

“I forgive you.”

Rue smiled with genuine, and Alex couldn't help but melt at the sight in front.

“I forgive you too.”

Alex returned the grin and soon the two childhood friends were back into their old selves, the coffee arrived afterwards and they drank. They were both quiet but the silence was a comfortable one.

They finished and Alex paid for it once again, declining for Rue's money, saying that he should be the one paying.

They exited the diner and Alex declared that he would escort Rue to her house, Rue knowing that he's stubborn, gladly accepted.

They walked and walked and finally reached their destination. Rue was about to enter through her front yard when she ran up to Alex and hugged him.

“Thanks for everything you dork.”

Alex stood frozen in place but reluctantly hugged back.

“No problem.”

Rue ran up to the door and waved at Alex, him waving back. Once she entered, Alex felt sad, an air of melancholy surrounding him as he went home.
