I woke up the next morning to find my phone buzzing like crazy. I had texts and missed calls from Mum and Dad.
Mum’s texts:
GABRIELLA!!! WHAT IS GOING ON?? WHY IS MAX IN JAIL??
Gabby??
Pleasee? Why is Max in jail?
Gabriella answer your mother!

Dad’s Texts:
Gabriella Shay Wellington! Why is your brother in jail and where the hell are you?
Gabriella!
Gabriella answer me!

I slid out of Connor’s arms and headed outside.
“Mum-“
“Oh Gabriella! Are you ok? Are you hurt? Where are you? Why is Max in jail?”
“Mum calm down. I’m ok. I am living with some friends. Max is in jail for abusing and harming me,”
“MAX DID WHAT!?!?!?!? HE HIT YOU???”
“Yes mum but it’s alright-,”
“I DID NOT RAISE AN ABUSIVE CHILD!! YOU’RE LYING!!”
“Mum if I am lying why is he in jail,”
“YOU TRICKED THE POLICE!! HE HAS NEVER HURT YOU EVER!!”
“They need a confession to be able to put him away,”
“HE WOULD HAVE CONFESSED TO COVER UP YOUR LIES AND TO KEEP YOU AWAY FROM JAIL!!!” I held the phone away from my ear each time she yelled.
“The police had enough proof to put him away mum. Why would I lie about this kind of thing? I would never intentionally hurt Max like he would hurt me,”
“LOOK STOP LYING TO ME AND YOURSELF! I AM SICK OF YOUR LYING!” I hung up after that. Max has always been the golden child.
He was god’s gift and wouldn’t hurt a fly; according to my parents. He should become an actor once he’s out of jail. As soon as mum and dad left on the plane to their latest ‘job opportunities’ Max would change into a completely different person. He would hit me if I don’t do as he told me to or if I accidentally didn’t hear him. He made sure that where he hit me could be easily covered. Once mum and dad got back he would hug me, smile and act like the best big brother in the world. I liked that Max. I miss that Max. A tear welled up in my eye. I heard the back door open and close behind me but I didn’t turn to look. An arm wrapped around my shoulders.
