Saga had always loved walking along the shore. She did not fair to well at sea however, often complaining of long strenuous journeys. Despite being Viking in all other ways, she faired happier when looking out to sea rather than being on a physical ship. Frigg, Siv and yourself laughed and cried when discussing this on your way to the shore. Where The Great Armies boats were docked. And so you decided amongst yourselves to hold a different kind of funeral. Instead of a boat burning, Saga would be laid to rest over a simple pyre.

Ivar had wanted to come with you. As had Ubbe and Hvitserk to pay their respects to the fallen maiden. But you three had decided to hold a small ceremony. With no more than ten of your most trusted warriors at the York coast.

You stand in between Siv and Frigg. All trying to control your tears as you watch Arne and Bo carry Saga and place her on top of the unlit pyre. Frigg is first to step towards her, spending some time by her side as she lays precious objects around her. Speaking to Saga for a few moments before turning back to you. Her eyes are wet, red and filled with sorrow. You rarely see each other like this. It was painful for each of you. As Frigg steps back alongside Siv you walk over to the pyre.

Looking down through the tears welling in your eyes, you stroke Saga's forehead. She is so cold, almost frozen and this causes your breath to hitch. You almost choke on the sobs rising in your throat.

"My dear Saga. I will never forget you, nor all you have done for me. You were a most fearsome shield maiden, a great ally and wise friend...but above all, you were my sister. Perhaps not by blood, but in spirit. I will miss you everyday that passes without you. But I will see you sat in Odin's hall...when the Gods see fit to take me to you." you speak soothingly to her whilst stroking her forehead with your thumb.

"I love you..." you whisper, leaning closer to her before placing a final kiss on her forehead. You sniff, begin to wipe the tears from your cheeks and turn back to Siv.

She is looking down to the lit torch in her hands, broken at having to say goodbye to her sister. Grabbing her shoulder as you join them, you look reassuringly to her as she meets your gaze. Smiling faintly to each other she wanders over the pyre. Speaking for a long while with her sister before moving the lit torch along the dry wooden base.

Siv takes a few steps back but stays closer to the pyre than the rest, as you all watch Saga disappear into the orange haze.
