as san made his way home on what was a beautiful, sunny day, he couldn't help but feel it was bittersweet. mingi wasn't his responsibility, but he felt unnerved about leaving him alone in that house like that. mingi was indeed troubled. he had a lot of underlying issues that were sure to have made a breakthrough at some point, san thought.

but despite this, he couldn't help but feel happy that y/n was away from him, safe and loved by san himself.

arriving home, san ran straight to y/n and almost suffocated her in his arms before even beginning to unpack the boot. they could now start their lives together and san was determined to give her the best years of her life.

"what's this for?" she asked in surprise.

"I just love you, baby"

"I love you too, sannie"

he stepped back and placed a small kiss onto her lips.

"how was mingi?" she asked tentatively.

san sighed and pulled the photograph out from his jacket pocket. "he wanted you to have this"

she took the photo and stared at it for a few seconds. san saw that her eyes were brimming over with tears. "he said... he said he will always love you" he added carefully.

"oh god" she said as she broke down into tears. san pulled her back into his tight hug.

"shhh" he soothed, "I didn't mean to upset you" he paused before continuing, "baby, I think... I think mingi needs help"

she looked up to his face.

"did he ever tell you about his parents?"

she took a seat on the sofa and san followed suit. "a little... I know what his dad was like"

"he told me about it too. he also told me that his dad planted negative thoughts into his head about your relationship - he told him he wasn't good enough and that you were probably with another guy"

y/n stared across the room, deep in thought.

"it's not an excuse" san continued, "but I believe it's the reason. I'm not excusing him at all but I can tell he cared about you a lot"

"I know he did"

"I advised him to seek some help" san said.

y/n was immersed in thought for a few seconds before she spoke up. "maybe... if he receives help... we could be friends?" she almost questioned herself.

"I think he would like that"

"but sannie, I need you to know. I love him - but I'm not in love with him anymore... I only love you. I know it hasn't been long but I've known you for years and the way you make me feel..."

"baby, I know. I feel the same - you know I do. but I don't mind if you want to help mingi. in fact, I think it would be very brave of you" he smiled. "and just know that whatever you decide, I will always be here by your side. I will never hurt you and I will never leave you"

-----

1 year later

"regular iced latte with soy milk and hazelnut syrup" called san as y/n finished on the previous coffee. he snuck over and whispered in her ear, "baby" which caused her to let out a small giggle.

the bell rang as the door opened on yet another customer - the cafe had been so busy recently. san went to greet the customer as he walked over to the counter.

"babe, do you wanna go on your break?" san asked, "mingi's here"

y/n turned and smiled widely at her ex boyfriend. "hey mingi, you want a drink?"

"just a cappuccino please" mingi replied.

"I'll make it" offered san, "you guys go sit down"

the two made their way to the table in the corner onto which the sun was shining brightly.

"you look good today, y/n" mingi complimented, to which y/n smiled and thanked him.

"so... I finished my therapy today" mingi began.

y/n smiled even wider, "that's amazing! how do you feel?"

"great. I got a new job at a clothing store in town too. I don't want to work for my dad anymore"

"that's fantastic, mingi" she paused, "I'm very proud of you"

"a cappuccino for you" san interrupted.

"sannie, mingi finished his therapy today - that's great, right?"

"well done, mingi" san smiled as he placed the cup down on the table.

"hang on, mingi, I'm just going to use the bathroom" y/n excused herself.

mingi watched her disappear to the other side of the cafe as san replaced her in her seat.

"hey san" mingi said brightly.

"it's really great to hear about your therapy. I'm glad you took my advice in the end" san told him.

"thank you, san" mingi replied, taking a sip of his coffee.

"I wanted to tell you something" san began.

"go for it"

"I just wanted you to hear it directly from me..."

"okay..."

"I'm going to ask y/n to... to marry me"

just for a fleeting second, san saw sadness pass over mingi's gaze. barely noticeable, but there. "oh!" he replied.

"I just didn't want it to be a surprise for you... if she says yes that is" san continued.

"she will say yes" mingi smiled, although san could tell it was still hard for him, "she's so in love with you... I can tell"

san laughed, "I hope so"

"I'm happy for you both, san"

"I want you to be there. if you can. I think it would mean a lot to y/n"

a year on, mingi's heart was still broken over y/n. he still missed her like crazy. but he was not alone in the house, yunho had moved in with him and was trying to convince him to move on with someone new. he wasn't quite ready, admittedly. but he laughed more these days, and being able to have y/n in his life still was something he was incredibly happy about.

as y/n returned to the table, mingi quickly spoke his answer, "I'll be there" he said.

"what are you guys talking about?" y/n chimed.

"I'm going back to work" san teased, "see you soon, babe!"

mingi looked down at the table.

"you okay, mingi? what was san talking about?"

"oh, nothing interesting" mingi lied.

y/n narrowed her eyes at mingi and he just laughed. she pouted but mingi didn't budge, still as stubborn as ever.

as the laughter died, mingi's face became serious.

"I'm still sorry everyday" he whispered, "but you're gonna have a good life, I know it. and I'm glad I'm still a small part of it"

"and you always will be, mingi"
