Crystalline shards twinkled in a cold garrison, erratically sloped over the dome of the area. Her pallored, dull eyes strayed towards the broken mirror that blanketed this forsaken place. The witching wind tousled strands of her dishevelled hair, and she shivered slightly.

Not from the cold, no, the breeze seemed to go right through her. So seemed reality, too.

In that moment, all that ran forth in her dwindling mind was repentance. Dusk was coming, there would be no more.

She glanced down at her violet and scarlet cladded knuckles, and the burns all over her palms. Rope burns. The machine had long taken away the body, but there was still a visible patch where it lay.

The soil around it lay still cluttered and torn, stomped and churned by the violence thrusted upon it.

Weakened by the memories, she lowered herself tentatively onto a nearby patch of grass, and closed her eyes, willingfully coaxing herself with repetitive mutters to try and sleep this nightmare off. The whispers of her shattered mind reminded her that she was not alone, disembodied voices racing across the veil like splinters.

Never would. Never will be. Memories don't die with time, they just get painted over.

A frond tickled her fingers, startling her eyes open to focus on a stray petal.

A calendula petal.

 She stares at it quietly.

Calendula.

The name of the petal, rising from the midsts of the blank slates.

Why did she remember it's name, but not hers?

She picks herself up, twirling the petal on her index and thumb as she surveys the landscape for the first time since she blanked out.

She was in a meadow, grass cut artificially short. Too sporadically neat to be real. Yet it still seemed so beautiful. How could disgusting creatures create such beautiful things? Springs of calendulas, amongst of tiny blue forget me nots littered the fronds and shrubbery through the rolling greens.

At least the girl passed in a beautiful place.

She hoped she didn't leave any differently. If she even deserved such calamity.

She had to earn it, she assumed. Maybe karma was watching.

Plucking away several flowers as carefully as she could, she gathered them into a little bunch under her other arm as she strolled slowly through the fields, scanning for anything she found aesthetically pleasing, removing them, and tucking them away.

The thorns of several fronds scrapped and split her fingers open as she worked through the night. She didn't notice.

When the clouds above her began to taint the skies with the colours of her knuckles, she knelt beside the patch of grass, the absent body.It was a mound of nothing but colours now.

Saying her final farewells, she rose, and unlatched her dagger as she left the scene.

Final moments POV:

It's warm. It's so warm.

In the stillness of time I feel myself free from the cacoon that life enslaved me to.

My legs hiss and crackle at the hungry lapses of the bloody light. But I must continue. My elbows grip the ashes as I claw and twist towards the grim, silent stature.

I stare back at the soul that knew me.There is nothing but contempt mixed with a fresh tinge of horror in her features.

No, it was pity.

My vision is blurring and my senses are dissolving into the calling void, but I see her lower herself on her haunches as she reaches for me.

I smiled weakly, knowing my figure was nearly indistinguishable at this point, but I reach back.

Feeble fingers touch the stray hand outstretched in a gesture of goodwill, but intentions naught.

And for the first and the last time, I felt it, the touch of humanity surging back through my hollowed out soul, as crimson consumed me into an eternal rest.
