°✧*:° ⋆𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐔𝐍𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 leaked through the cloudy blinds of the sky, trickling across the fields like honey, thick and golden. it was a hazy afternoon, the kind where you feel high off happiness to the point you get sleepy. summer was creeping across the Fairchild estate, slowly but surely. the buds nipping carnation yellows and the grass free from dew.
miles' hands rested on the steering wheel, his eyes concentrating on the narrow lane in front of him, but still finding time to glance at what he thought to be an angel sat next to him. Y/N's head lulled on his shoulder, her legs tucked up next to her on the seat and feeling the breeze of the wind on her bare legs. the humming wind blew her hair around a little, but not cooling the flush on her cheeks. she was wearing those little denim shorts that miles convinced her to wear, and he, for once, wasn't wearing a stuffy sweater, but a t-shirt and jeans. Y/N's fingers fiddled with the silver necklace that rested on her neck, opening and closing the locket.
Y/N admired the passing view, humming the song that quietly played from the radio. miles hadn't left the estate in a while, and decided it was time to take Y/N to the nearby town for some fun.
" so miles, you never told me why you got expelled from your boarding school?"
he tensed up. she felt it, her body leaning on the side of his. his jaw clenched and his grip on the steering wheel had tightened. Y/N hadn't meant to ruin things, and anxiety started to grow up inside her, the kind where your heart races and your mind starts to speed up.
" that's none of your business." he sourly said.
" why is it that whenever I try to get closer to you, you always shy away from me?" she asked, curiously.
" you wouldn't understand." he said, his throat aching to spill the words.
Y/N pressed on.
" try me. " she challenged.
" my problem is that I'm scared," he let out.
" i'm scared of getting to attached to someone, until eventually, that someone has the power to control me. to end my world when they feel like it."
he breifly thought about quint brainwashing him to do and think certain things, to not realise what he had done to miss jessell. his eyes welled at the sight of flora staring blankly at him after witnessing their parents death and remembering for a second, that gut-wrenching feeling of his world crumbling around him.
