_________________________________AVA ENDED UP STAYING at John B's that night, just to keep an eye on him after everything that happened at the party. Luckily, she had left that note for her father saying she was staying at Kie's so he wouldn't freak out if she didn't make it home that night. The others went home though and promised to come back the next morning so they could talk more about their plans for the wreck they found in the marsh.
So, Ava crashed on the couch as she usually did when she stayed at John B's and as soon as her head it the pillow, she was out like a light. She didn't even feel like she actually slept. It felt like she'd closed her eyes for ten minutes before she heard someone knocking on the wood of the front door.
"Knock, knock."
Grimacing, Ava picked her head up off the pillow and slowly opened her eyes, blinking an couple times to allow her eyes to focus on the sunlight and the person standing in front of her.
"Good morning, Sheriff." She yawned, "What brings you by this early?"
She brushed the loose strands of hair out of her eyes as she sat up straight, rubbing her eyes tiredly.
"I think you know, Miss Hargrove." Peterkin looked at her, "You wanna tell me what happened at the beach last night?"
Ava should have figured that was why she was here. No doubt with the way that party ended that word would get to the police. She just wasn't sure exactly how much Peterkin knew.
So, she decided on playing dumb, "What do you mean?"
"Look, I know you were there last night," Peterkin leveled with her, "And I also know that someone had a gun. I have a pretty good idea who it was and trust me, I'm gonna deal with him later. So, you wanna tell me what went down?"
Ava narrowed her eyes, "If you know so much, why are you asking me?"
The Pogues were no strangers to Peterkin or the rest of the Kildare police given their track record of getting into trouble often. Peterkin knew each of the troubled teens pretty well...but she was always fair to them. And a lot more patient than she probably should be.
