Once, a fair and young woman lived in a small and humble town. She was beautiful, kind, and gentle. It was no doubt that she had a lot of suitors and admirers at her very young age. Despite the great adoration she receives, the young woman rarely goes outside or let a shed of light enter inside her house. When she turned 18, she only grew more beautiful and flocks of men would gather outside her house. Sometimes, following her while she was in the market or watching her while she's in her garden. It was then, for the first time, the beautiful girl walked outside at her house for a different purpose than she usually does. She went straight to the center of the town, at the plaza, wherein a lot of men and curious gazes stared at her.
She stand up straight at the center, looking at each one of the people in their town. Curiousity. Bewilderment. Disgust. Envy. All of which she can see at the eyes of every man and woman looking at her. She sighed. It was against her will but she had no choice. This was tradition. She kept saying this inside her head. She sighed once more and took a deep breath.
"Good morning po. Alam ko pong ang iba sa inyo ay nakikilala ang. Ang iba ay hindi pero ayos lang din po. Ako si Gwen Cooper nakatira po sa bahay na iyon." their eyes followed as she pointed at a house that looks exactly like the rest of the houses in her town.
"Kaya po ako nandito dahil, nasa tamang edad na po ako. At... at handa na po akong ikasal." The men in the crowd went wild like the animals that they really are. Screaming "pick me", "ako na lang", or whatever so that they can bring the woman's attention to them. Some women rolled their eyes out of disgust and envy.
"Sa isang kondisyon." Gwen shouted to keep them at ease. Everyone went silent after that. Curious what are the next words she would spit. Waiting patiently what she meant.
"I will only marry the man who can open my front door with the key around my cat's neck. You will know who my cat is. She is small and black. Her eyes are big and brown like mine."
Silence conquered. Everyone stared at her. They got back to their senses when Gwen faked a cough.
"Well then, good morning to all of you." She said and strut her way back to her house and a meow was heard.
News spread like wildfire. Well, it was a small town after all. Many men were interested, joined the hunt of the black cat. A lot of them tried to hunt it, chase or trap it down, but no avail. The cat was simply fast, smart and clever at the very least. It was just a small house cat but it seemed they were trying to hunt a black panther.
A newcomer, and an adventurer at that, happened to transfer at the said town. He found this town and thought that this would finally be his peace, a sanctuary as he rests and runs away from the world he used to lived in. Of course, he was new to town when he heard the famous rumor of the cat hunt.
Why not? He said. One last adventure? One last challenge? He laughed silently. He decided to join the hunt.
He, the newcomer, would perhaps end the wild cat chase.
