"brownies or Oreo cookies?" Ruby asked eyeing the little blond girl who tucked her golden hair behind her ear and kept on following her each and every move with attentive crystal blue eyes.
The little girl looked like a doll. With blond from root to tip, her hair shined like sunshine illuminating her surroundings. She looked like the essence of summer, the sun, warmth and life and her name was a tell tale of that. Her blue eyes though contrasted such warmth and held a cold gaze reminding Ruby of the dangerous depths of the sea.
"Am I annoying?" Eva asked abruptly and Ruby was left yet again to question the mental age and probably issues such girl is living through.
"Why would you say that?" Ruby asked putting away the two printed recipes that she held in hand for Eva to pick from.
Eva looked mature right then. Her hand supported her chin as she leaned in thought over the kitchen island. Ruby deciphered pain in the overthought words of the little girl. She hated seeing such a beautiful young soul being called "annoying"....Is Eva bullied and by whom?!
"Amelia said so." Eva answered with apparent distaste.
" Are you bullied by an Amelia at school?" Ruby asked taking a seat next to the little girl. She spoke as softly as possible to encourage the girl to open up to her...Maybe she could help her somehow?
"No, no kid can cross me , at school. I am basically their leader. One wrong word and I can set them right by using sarcasm and some dark humor. Frankly, they avoid getting on my bad side." Eva revealed with an evil smirk and Ruby wished someone would pinch her so she can make sure if this is real or not. How can a six year old speak so maturely ? And did she say sarcasm and dark humor? From where did she learn such words? How does she even know how to smirk?!
Kids , nowadays!
"Back in my days, I would have thought that sarcasm was a type of ice cream." Ruby joked making Eva smile brightly at her.
"Amelia is the newest nanny I have. She looks like a barbie but is stupid as a hippo. She said that I am an annoying brat and if it wasn't for my dad's looks and money no one would agree on being my nanny. " the six year old informed and her lips pouted in sadness. No matter how cool she is trying to be she is clearly hurt and no child should be told that they aren't good enough or that their father is apparently hot.
"You are one of the smartest kids I have ever met. Spending time with you is a blessing. Maybe I could help you to talk to your dad about getting you a new nanny. " she offered hugging the girl who eagerly hugged her back clutching her two little hands on Ruby's shirt. When was the last time someone cared enough to hug such sweet soul?
"He is already kissing Amelia. She won't last for a week...They all come and go like they never existed. Can't you be my nanny?" the blond pleaded not letting go.
"I wish that I can sweetheart. I , however, have a work of my own. I am a web designer and many companies and shops reach out to me so I cannot offer you my whole time. You need someone there and present all day to pay attention to you, love you and care for you...I am right next door though. I am mostly working from home so whenever you feel like joining me please do." The woman offered letting go of the girl who nodded understandingly.
"If only I had a mommy...Guess she didn't want me either." Tears twinkled in the depths of her crystal eyes.
" Hey don't say that. You are as precious as ever." Ruby promised making the girl smile again. Even though one statement played in her head : If only I had a baby.
" I love being here." Eva announced cheerily bringing Ruby out of her misery.
" You are most welcomed here, whenever. So Oreo cookies or brownies?" Ruby asked grinning
"What about Oreo brownies?" the little girl suggested her eyes growing wide with excitement.
"Oh my god , you are a genius." Ruby cheered making the little girl clap.
In less than ten minutes, flour was all over their faces and about six Oreos were stolen by them to eat. They laughed forgetting their shared pains and danced listening to " Dance Monkey" and many other songs. They were in their own world making the perfect creamy white and dark cookie brownies, until they heard a thudding knock on the door. It sounded urgent and both kind of guessed who it is.
Eva without asking for permission wiped her hands clean and ran to the door. Ruby followed her lead making sure that no stranger would be a danger to the little girl. As soon as the door opened, a man with tousled dark blond hair, which was thick and lustrous stood rigidly. His eyes were a mesmerizing deep ocean blue with flecks of silvery light. His face was strong and defined, his features molded from granite. He had dark eye brows, which sloped downwards in a serious expression and clear rage.
"Eva Jae Gray! " the man yelled scaring the daze out of Ruby. She was about to hide the little girl behind her and tell him not to yell at her but Eva already stood for herself.
"It took you an hour to discover that I am gone! I could have been kidnapped and murdered." The girl yelled back with the same fierceness and crossed her hands with a huff.
"Don't say that and no one asked you to leave the house." the man , her dad Ruby concluded, replied his anger washing away a bit.
" I won't sit around when my nanny is babysitting you." The girl blamed and Ruby felt out of place, maybe she should walk inside and allow them to solve their family problems.
"Eva , you cannot speak to your dad this way and Amelia is already fired. I have been calling your name around the street for five minutes and then I remembered you saying something about our neighbor and cookies so I decided to try my luck. I nearly lost it. Don't you ever run away again. " The blond guy said falling to his knees and hugging the girl close to his heart.
"Ruby , her name is Ruby" Eva introduced hugging her dad back. She could never stay mad at him.
"Hi, I am Sin Gray, Eva's dad." the man introduced himself offering a guarded yet polite nod.
"Ruby Davis " she echoed her name back mirroring his nod.
"thanks but if this ever happens again, send her home or at least inform me. This could be considered an act of kidnapping " The man spoke with an air of haughtiness and rudeness .
" Sorry" Ruby was shocked at how rudely unapologetic he was.
"Don't talk to her like that." Eva grumbled pointing a finger at her dad. " She could easily call child services on you."
"Eva , sweetheart, this is not worth fighting your dad for. He is probably just too stressed from your disappearing. He doesn't know what he is saying. Next time ask for his permission okay? or at least keep him informed. You are always welcomed here okay? " Ruby brushed off seeing how tense Sin's body became at the words of his girl.
"You are the best." Eva chanted hugging Ruby tightly.
"Come on Eva , let's go. " Sin ordered and at that Ruby hushed at the blond girl that she would bring her some brownies tomorrow.
