Chapter 6

I have a love and hate relationship with Enjera, the traditional food of Ethiopia. Eaten alone it’s so sour, but with the right amount of sauces it tastes like heaven.

But right now all I’m feeling is the
sourness and her sister’s big calculative eyes on me.

I had lost all appetite in me when I had arrived at her brother’s apartment and saw he had a big dog that growled and barked at me when ever we met eyes.

And to add to that all the siblings were in the same house trying to figure me out.

We were all silently having dinner when Simions wife, Tsion suddenly asked “ Soo, How is life in Korea? What do you do? ”

“ Oh, I’m an Actor, mostly into acting. But also into the real estate agency business? ”
“ Actor? ” Zeki and Yohana said at the same time.

Surprised by their sudden outburst “ Didn’t Rodas mention that? ”

“ Well no, She just said you were in the real estate business.” explained Zeki.

Then we were back to the awkward silence.

I didn’t really understand why she didn’t tell them I was an Actor. I couldn’t really understand what was going on.

Rodas has a lot of explaining to do when I get back.

“ What’s your religion?” carefully Simion asked.

“ I actually don’t have one. I used to go to church following after my mom when I was young, but
my church is definitely different from yours.” I said jokingly, to lighten up the mood.

But I don’t think her sister liked my answer because she suddenly started speaking in Amharic with the others.

I stayed silent.

Honestly I had followed Rodas to her church back in Seoul. Well lets just it became the red carpet when I went out after the service.

I felt awful not knowing what they were saying. All those Amharic lessons I took with her cousin back in Korea evaporated like smoke. I couldn’t grasp what they were saying.

“ How long have you guys been dating then? ” Yohana interrogated.

“ A year. But it has been 3 years since we met.” I replied.

“ How famous are you? ”

“ Your mother mentioned she liked my Dramas.” Yohana scoffed and looked bewildered.

“ I don’t understand what the issue is here?” I said, because the vibes they were giving me was not nice.

“Yehema ayhonem (This must not be)” I heard Yohana say to her brothers.

“ This is not our decision to make Yohana. We are here to get to know him well.” said Simion and brushed her off.

“ So, How are you planning to have the wedding then ?” Simion continued.

“ We haven’t thought that through, but I was thinking of letting Rodas plan it?” Honestly, I didn’t care much about the ceremony. All I wanted was her by my side forever.

“ Have you guys slept together?” Yohana bluntly asked.

“ Yohana” Both the brothers screamed at her. Yohana looked expectantly at me.

“ You have no right to ask that you know. You got married cause you were pregnant!” retorted Zekarias angrily.

“ I had my reasons and you know too well what they are. You were there!” She huffed.

“ You don’t know the situation Rodas is in to say that too, Yoh” said Simion trying to smooth the tension between the siblings.

Simion is the calmest of all siblings. He was always the mediator between every disagreement between the whole family.

During his wedding, there was a disagreement about which church his wedding was taking place and he smoothly chose a church with his wife and had let the family know.

“ No, we haven’t ” I replied to her previous question. She had looked pleased.

“ When are you guys planning to have the wedding?” It was Tsion who asked.

“ As soon as possible, well atleast that’s what I want.” I smiled.

“ What do you love so much about her? ” Simion asked.

“ Probably, the same thing you love about your wife.”

“ Dude know his way around words. ” Joked Zeki and added “ You have my blessings.”

“ Mine too, ” smiled Simion.

I looked expectantly at her sister waiting for her to say something.

“ It’s not like my opinion matters. ” She said and looked away annoyed.

“ It does ” I said.

“ But not to Rodas. That girl never took me seriously. She always favored Simion from all of us. His word is the law with her.”

“ It does matter to her your her sister. It also matters to me too.” I pushed.

“ I’ll give you my blessings, if you visit often. Mom is never left alone.” she confessed.

“ I promise.” Everyone was smiling now that it was off there chest.

Enjera never tasted so sweet before.
