Chapter 7 ~ History

Ethiopia is a country with a beautiful Heritage, culture and thousands years of legend. It is also said to be the country where the first man was created and have lived.

Lucy and many other old fossils are discovered in Ethiopia adding truth to the theory behind the first man.

It’s also a country with diverse religion living in harmony. Ethiopia is not only mentioned in the Bible, but also in Quran as a country with justice.

No wonder the people were so prideful.

Today we were travelling to one of the oldest city of Axum. It used to be the capital of ancient Ethiopia and a city with rich history and tradition. It is almost an hour plane ride from the capital Addis Ababa.

Rodas had been looking anxious and worried these days. I think it's because of our wedding and all. I'm pretty sure she doesn't know where to start. And she's too prideful to ask.

I had suggested she talk to her sister, but she turned me down as fast as lightning. Claiming they were too different that their stars don't match And would rather ask Senait. Never knew what she meant, but I just shrugged and left her to her thoughts.

But sooner or later, I'm pretty sure she's gonna ask her for help. Senait is as clueless as her, doubt she'll be of help.

She looked troubled in the plane, so I asked her about the famous tales of Axum. Rodas is very passionate about her history.

“ You know the famous Queen Saba? ” asked Rodas.

"Saba?" I repeated,

"Or you probably know her as Queen Sheba of the Nile?"

I was still clueless, "I'm not sure."

"Well she is mentioned in the Bible. She had come to visit King Solomon seeking for his wisdom. "

“ Yes, I think I read about that. One of the beautiful women in history.” I winked.

I earned a punch of jealousy from that comment.

“ Yep, True. Queen Sheba or Queen Saba as we call her, is Ethiopian. It is read that Queen Saba had a horn in her ankle and was very troubled by it. She heard tales  about the famous wise King Solomon of Israel and went to seek his wisdom.”

“Uhuh” I nodded.

“ She was a very rich Queen so her visit was not empty handed. She had brought
along her armies and gold as a token for the King." She continued.

"As she boarded harbour the Kings handman had seen her and her ankle then ran to tell his master of the new visitors.” I was already immersed with the story that I was listening to every word she was saying.

“The hand man had informed the King by the time the Queen entered the castle. But the King was suprised to see that there was no horn on her ankle. He questioned his hand man about this and the later answered that it was indeed the Queen, but that she had a horn in her ankle earlier. The Queen answered their question saying a big log outside the castle knocked it off."

" It is later believed this log was one of the logs that made the cross that Jesus Christ was crucified on.”

“It is believed that Queen Saba had stayed in Israel for 7 years. King Solomon was smitten by her beauty had a son with her. King Solomon offered to make her one of his Queens of Israel and her son a King after him, but the Priests and law makers of Israel disagreed that it was in law that no foreigner was allowed take power. When the Queen heard this she stood to leave back to her country where she claimed that her son will take her crown and be King there. ”

"One of his Queens?" I asked baffled,

"Yep, it is believed that King Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines" she laughed.

"Sweet, What does he do with all of them?" I joked. I am hanging around her friends too much I noticed.

She gave me a glare and said " I don't know. Males are hard to figure out." And continued on with her story.

“ The King saddened by her leaving, gave her golds, warriors, and Priests; to teach her country the religion. The Priests didn’t want to leave the Arc of Covenant in Israel so they stole it and brought it to Ethiopia with them. Queen Saba didn’t know she came with the Arc of Covenant she understood later on. Axum is the place where the Arc of Covenant is placed.” she finished.

“Wow. can we see the Arc?”

“ Ofcourse not! The Arc of Covenant is hidden from eyes of people and no one can enter the church it resides in, except one person. The person that enters it is believed to be chosen by God and once he enters, he cannot leave and he is the keeper of the Arc. When that person
dies he is buried there by his replacement.” I nodded, processing all the information I just heard.

It was really country rich in Tradition, Culture and Religion.

“ You could say Queen Saba is my role model I loved hearing stories of her growng up. She was a smart prideful person. It is also said that she was wise  and quizzed the King a lot during her stay in Israel. ”

“ It is truly a beautiful legend.” I said.

She nodded and added “Her son is called Menelik the first. Kings after that could only take power if they claimed descendent of his blood line or else the people would revolt and take them down. The dynasty was called Solomonic Dynasty after that.”

“ Wasn’t there never a King with out that claim. ”

“ There were ofcourse, the Zagwe Dynasty. They had power for few decades, but a warrior from the North gathered people and troops to revolt based on the fact that the rightful leaders had to be from Menelik the first blood line. He won the war and took power and claimed to have restored the blood line. ”

“ Every region in Ethiopia has their own legends that is as beautiful and mesmerizing.” she continued on with stories until we had arrived.

She was fine now all the anxiety leaving her with a reminder of her history. I have always wondered why she hasn't majored in that and when I asked she would always say " I will one day."

She is very passionate.
