Outside, the sky was a dark sheet of pure blackness. Stars glowed vividly and building lights glowed in the distance. The air was crisp and damp as rain bounced off many cars.
Jake and Amy drove futher away from the city. Across the brooklyn Bridge to cross the other burrow, to reach their check point. The car journey wasn't long. But it sure was quiet. But thankfully, the muffled pitter patter of the rain swarmed and swallowed the sound of nothing between them.
Amy sat on the passenger side of the car. Her mind was too preoccupied with thoughts, she couldn't possibly have the focus to be behind the wheel. So many clogs were turning in her head. What was she doing? Going back to a place that caused her so much damage and hurting memories? But on the other side of her mind. She was saving a little girl. A poor mother was crying for her little girl. Amy had to step up, be the real cop and ignore her worries.
Or at least try to.
Her head was still slightly sore, but fading off. But her sickness still remained. She was sweating but not out of fear. Her chest felt tighter and her persistent cough still clung to her like glue and jake wasn't looking any better. For him, he was cold. Shivering. His coughs scratched his throat like sharp small blades and his energy dropped levels deep. His eyes felt like heaps of concrete and his nose was blocked. His face was so pale. Almost like he was dead. That type of pale. Except, under his eyes, yellowish orangery rings sat underneath. Around his nose was the same. It was almost like he had a apocalyptic virus.
He couldn't take it anymore. He needed something to ease it off.
"Amy. Tell me you brought th-" he coughed "Those painkillers" he rasped.
"Uhh, should do" she said, checking her pockets to then wrap her fingers around an object "Got it. Here"
Amy handed over him the tube.
Jake took one hand off the wheel and flicked open the white cap with his thumb. He then didn't hesitate to throw in three more little pills inside his mouth and swallow.
"Getting worse?" Amy asked softly.
"Yeah. I don't know what the hell it is. But its killing me" he said sturnly. Still having his eyes on the road.
Amy then took back the pills, and placed two on her hand.
"I caught what you have" she said, now throwing back the pills into her mouth "Hopefully these will help for the time being."
She then placed them back into her pocket and looked up. Ahead, just over a hill. Stood the very building itself. So abandoned.
No other buildings surronded it. Only heaps of dead grass and trees. It was far away from the city.
Jake then passed the rusted gates, and drove very observant to the building. Greeny painted the bricked outside walls. Windows were bombarded with wooden planks and darkness fulfilled the building. It was just like amy remembered.
The car came to a soft brake and their eyes both glanced up. Just looking at it. Amy pulled her gaze away and looked down to her feet. Her heart was pounding. Her mind was swimming in the thoughts. She couldn't back out now. Here they were.
"Jake" she spoke, still looking down "Im sorry for everything"
Jake looked at his wife, who still didnt look up and sighed sadly. She was clearly scared and didn't want to lose him.
"Ames, it's alright" he took her hand "No matter what. I will always love you. I just care."
Amy then looked up with her frown on her face and looked at jake. Smiling in pity.
