Two years later – At an undisclosed SHIELD base
"Zin, pay attention," Nat said.
Zin looked away from the glass above them as the silhouette of a dark figure disappeared around the area she thought the monitor was.
"Sorry, I thought I just saw Fury," Zin said.
"It's alright, this isn't exactly the most enjoyable exercise for an eleven-year-old," Nat said.
"Yeah...about that, I just don't see how this is the most useful one I've been learning lately," She said.
"Well, I don't make the rules kiddo. Fury thinks it's best you be prepared for all situations when you're out in the world. People won't be so keen when they discover—"
"—an alien attending their school, yah, yah, I know. It's not that. It's just why would I need to disarm a gun without my powers?" Zin said as she prepared her stance against the black tarp.
Nat smirked at the remark and steadied the gun towards her head.
"Because you can't always control your powers, and your power dampener will turn on when you're out in the public," Nat said as Zin breathed in.
In a few quick moves, she ducked as the blank was set off. Zin grabbed at Nat's elbow to turn around the situation but Nat was fast, more skilled, more trained, mature. As fast as Zin had dodged the whizz of air Nat had managed to pin her to her back, the gun pressed squared on her head.
"You were distracted," Nat said as Zin heaved in air, shaking.
"I-I know, sorry," Zin said.
Nat nodded like she always does. With a few words, she raised out her hand towards her. But a voice blared over the speakers.
"She can get up herself Agent Romanoff," Fury said over the training room coms.
A door opened past the frosted glass dome that hung above them. His face was blank, probably more tired than usual. At least that's what she thought, as he stormed down the stairs till the grounds of the training room echoed with his leather boots.
"In the real world, you won't get help and people are more ruthless then Romanoff cares to divulge you in," Fury said.
"Fury, she's just a kid—" Nat said but Fury raised his hand.
"Eleven-years-old I know, but she's a walking bomb that I wouldn't want the world to find out about. So, it's better to be prepared for the worse," He said and helped Zin up this time to her feet.
He looked her in the eyes with the single eye that Zin had grown uses to gazing into for so long. Out of respect but also out of fear. She nodded.
"Good," He said and turned for the stairs.
"Go get washed up for school," Nat said as they both watched Fury make his way back to the monitor room.
"Okay," Zin said and turned for the change room but stopped at the doors.
Nat stood planted looking at the gun that lied on the mat then back to the monitor rooms that Fury had disappeared to.
"Thank you. Nat," Zin said.
Nat lifted her eyes to look at hers and smiled, those rare smiles that she couldn't tell were real or not.
"Anytime, Zinnia," Nat said.
She turned to leave again but sensed it before she felt it. She was in Nat's arms, a hug, something she'd imagine is what mothers would do.
"You did great," Nat said a soft whisper before patting her on the back towards the change rooms.
She smiled at the gesture; she knew that was real.
