Virgil sat across from Logan at the table in the dining room. Logan looked up from his book at him. "Good morning Virgil."
Virgil narrowed his eyes at Logan, sniffing the air. "Morning."
Logan raised an eyebrow. "Is something the matter?"
Virgil looked at him and shook his head. "Have you had breakfast yet?" Logan nodded. "What did you have?" Virgil watched him closely, trying to decide if and how he should bring up the topic of them most likely lying to him and Patton about Logan's class.
"I had some cereal and coffee."
"Have you been out yet today?" Virgil continued smelling the air. It wasn't different to how Logan usually smelt, a bit stronger than normal and sweeter, perhaps. Still some weird scent that wasn't quite beta but close enough that not a lot of people would have questioned it. Unfortunately for Logan and Roman, Virgil was one of those people who would question it, and then proceed to let the questioning dominate his thought process for weeks.
"I haven't." Logan frowned and held his book closer to himself. Virgil watched him closely. His body language had become tense, and a subtle anxious scent filled the air. "Why do you ask?"
"You smell weird. You always smell weird." Virgil leaned forward. "It doesn't smell like beta."
Logan's eyes widened, and the anxious scent began to permeate the room further. It was a scent Virgil could recognize instantly. "Well, like I said when we first moved in, my scent will probably be mixed with omega for another month or so. I was working full time with omegas, it's skewed my scent I'm afraid. Does it bother you?"
Did it bother him? Virgil nearly laughed. "A little. I'm usually good at recognizing scents, yours has just been really strange."
Logan's shoulders lowered slightly. . "My apologies. I have been trying to get my scent back to normal, but it seems the only thing that will help is time."
Virgil nodded. "There's an alpha scent on you too." His eyes fixed on Logan, watching him intently.
"Roman and I-"
"It isn't Roman. I know that, as a beta, your sense of smell isn't the best." He leaned in. "But Roman's scent is very recognizable. The alpha scent on you is different from his. It's very faint as well, if it was Roman's scent it would be all over you." Virgil partially felt bad for Logan. He was clearly uncomfortable and anxious. His eyes flitted to different parts of the room, as if searching for a way out of the conversation.
Virgil sighed. For some reason he couldn't put his finger on, he didn't like seeing Logan look so unsure and afraid. He wouldn't let Logan off the hook completely, but he could make it easier for him.
"Are you cheating on Roman?" He nearly smiled when Logan started, eyes wide in surprise.
"What? No! I wouldn't, that's ridiculous." He put his book down. "I love Roman. And despite what you may have heard, betas are not any more flighty or promiscuous than any other class. I'd never want to be with anyone besides Roman."
Virgil leaned back in his chair, growing more comfortable. "So what is the alpha scent then?"
Logan shrugged and looked down. "I don't know. Perhaps an alpha at the library has been influencing my scent without my noticing."
Virgil frowned. "You're only there once a week."
"You said it was a faint smell. It all seems to fit together. Do you think I am lying?"
Virgil didn't respond right away. That was the kicker, wasn't it? He didn't want to think Logan was lying, but.... he did. He couldn't shake the feeling that Logan was lying to him, that Logan wasn't really a beta and something was wrong. Something about Logan was indescribably wrong, and Virgil desperately wanted to know what it was.
"I don't necessarily think you're lying. I just find it odd, your scent is really unusual."
"Hopefully it will be back to my own soon enough." Logan turned back to his book, and Virgil stood up.
"Yeah. Hopefully." Virgil went into the kitchen and put some bread in the toaster. "Where is Roman anyway?"
"He's gone out to refill my prescription. He'll be back in around half an hour."
Virgil nodded. "Still not comfortable talking about your meds?"
Logan nodded. "Correct." He stood up and went to his room.
Virgil sighed and pulled his toast out of the toaster after it popped up. Was he really just being crazy at this point? He had no reason not to trust them. Patton was right too, even if they were lying, it wasn't as if they'd done anything wrong yet.
But that didn't mean that they wouldn't. It didn't mean they weren't planning something. And it certainly didn't mean Virgil had no right to the truth. It bothered him well beyond a reasonable amount, he could admit, but it bothered him all the same. He'd been lied to in the past, and he was determined to never let that happen again. Especially not when it would affect Patton as well.
And if they were lying, it meant they had something to hide. Most likely something sinister. Something that might hurt Virgil and Patton.
Virgil finished making his toast and went back to his room, sitting on the bed next to where Patton lay, still asleep. After he finished his toast, he laid down and curled next to Patton, snuggling into his sleeping mate. He smiled fondly at Patton as he slept.
His face was relaxed and serene, eyes fluttering every now and again. His blonde hair rested against his forehead, some falling into his eyes. Freckles were scattered across his face, giving him even more of an innocent look. Virgil kissed his forehead softly, then laid down and closed his eyes, slowly falling back asleep.
He'd learn if Logan was lying. He had to.
