Rain poured down from the winter skies. It's icy droplets freezing everything in it's path. Cold winds slapped everyone with a cold hand. Everyone stayed at home where it was warm and dry. Everyone except Goku. He walked through the harsh winter winds mixed with the icy rains. All he wore was a flimsy blue jacket, some loose blue jeans, beaten and worn out shoes, and a pink bandanna around his neck. The only thing protecting him from the rain was a small weathered down umbrella. Frankly, he didn't care at all. All that mattered to Goku was going to see his mother at the hospital. When he arrived he was partially soaked and was shivering. The nurses and doctors immediately recognized him and waved him hello before walking off to do their business. Goku walked to his mother's room and found her doing the same as always. Sleeping. He knew it wasn't sleeping. He knew his mother was in a coma.
"H-Hi, Mom." Goku's voice was barely above a whisper. He pulled out a withered pink rose and set it down on the nightstand next to the one he brought yesterday and the day before and so on. He took a seat next to his mother like he always did and studied her gorgeous features. "I got accepted into a university nearby." Goku spoke again as if his mother was gonna respond. "I... I'm supposed to be graduating high school soon too." He looked down at his mother's wrists where the hospital tag was at. He read his mother's name over and over again, Gine. Goku sighed and dipped his head. "Y-you probably won't see me walk the stage..." Pain filled the young boy's chest. He wanted his mother to see him grow up so bad. He did everything he could to save precious moments of him and his brother growing up after Gine fell into a deep sleep. Clinging to the hope of his mother waking up one day and she'll be able to see the moments she'd missed while being away from reality. Goku wiped away the forming tears in his eyes. "I miss you...." He sighed kissing his mother's cheek gently. A flashback of his mother came to mind. Reminding him of the sweet kisses she would always give him.
"Mommy!" a little Goku cried out after waking up from a nightmare. He ran to his parents room while carrying his favorite stuffed animal. He opened the door to find his mother already up and walking towards him. Goku immediately ran towards her arms stretched out. Gine picked him up holding the small boy close to her chest. "Mommy, I-I had a nightmare..." Goku sniffled burying his face in his mother's neck. "I'm sorry sweety. Do you want to sleep with Mommy?" Gine asked her voice silk and soft, full of love and adoration. Goku nodded holding on to his mother still as she walked them both to the large bed. Gine laid them both down her body curled around Goku's. The little boy held on tightly to his mother scared to lose her. "Don't worry baby. Mommy's never leaving." Gine pressed a gentle feather like kiss to Goku's forehead as he drifted off to dreamland.
Goku bit his bottom lip as he recalled that phrase. Mommy's never leaving. He looked over at Gine a sense of anger filled him. His mother left him, breaking her promise, and created hell at home. Sadness quickly vanquished anger. How can he get angry at Gine for something out of her control? Goku stayed there having a one sided conversation until he had to leave. He kissed his mother goodbye as he left for home. The cold rains and winds ceased and it was just cold grey skies. He stopped by a few stores to pick up some things needed at home. When he arrived it was the same as he left it before. Only this time his wasted father, Bardcock, was home. He was hunched over the counter sitting on a stool. Goku could hear the soft crying from him. The young son frowned even more. He can't remember a day where Bardock was sober. It was ever since Gine left he was like that. Always drinking and always depressed. If it wasn't for Goku's brother, Raditz, Bardcock would've killed himself long ago. The drunk man didn't seem to notice Goku and the youngest son was a bit relieved. Goku wasn't really in the mood to deal with his father's emotions. He dropped the things on the counter and made a beeline to his room. He shut the door behind him locking it much like he usually does. Goku turned around to be greeted by the comforts of his room. The walls were a beige color, his bed was small but looked incredibly comfortable, he had a small desk area which was covered in papers and books, and finally there was a large shelf containing more books and precious items. Goku walked over to his shelf. It was an old one. The wood was aged and worn. He remembered the day his father and mother built this. They were tired of seeing books and toys strewn across the floor so they built a large shelf to put those things away. Goku traced his fingers across an old carving he did on it. It was his family name's. Another flashback came to mind and it was when the carvings were done.
Goku was jumping up and down excited to have his family in his room. He practically begged his mother to do this with him. "C'mon! C'mon!" He heard his mother laugh and his father give a small grunt. As for his brother he was simply annoyed by it. "Why do we have to do this? It's dumb." Goku turned to his brother with the brightest smile. "Because we built that big shelf together!" Goku himself really didn't know the reason but he felt like had to. Once the small family was in the room the went over to the newly built shelf to carve out their names. Goku did his first, Gine was next, then Bardock, and finally Raditz. The little boy was so happy he hugged his family tightly.
That was one of the last moments Goku had with his mother and the one of the last moments where his family was stable. He frowned as he knew his family won't ever be the same. Goku heard another door slam and knew it was his brother. He heard yelling again and Goku knew that Raditz was arguing with Bardock about his drinking.
"You're back at it again?! That junk is going to kill you!"
"Who gives a damn anymore?! Just leave me the fuck alone alone brat!"
"No! Give me that shit!"
"Let go! No!"
There was a loud crash and silence fell afterwards for a few moments.
"You stupid fucking brat!"
Goku heard his father walk past his room and into the guest room. He sighed remembering that Bardock hasn't slept in his own room because of Gine's absence. Goku goes in there to keep it clean but mostly because he missed Gine. He was the only one that goes in there. Goku shook his head and called it a day early. He fell asleep and woke up the next day. Surprised he was able to sleep for such a long time. Goku got up from his bed, showered, dresses, ate, and was out the door again. He walked to school which wasn't far. Many people had asked him why not take the car. Goku's answer remained the same, silence. He made it to class on time and noticed a new face.
"Class I want you to meet Vegeta. He's a transfer student." The new student was short and wore the usual black school uniform. Vegeta simply waved to the class and seemed laid back. He took a seat next to Goku and side glanced him. Goku wasn't too sure what to make of his new classmate. He was more confused in why did Vegeta transfer so late in the school year. So he just went with it. Vegeta had his own reasons and it wasn't any of his business. The class was let on free time as the teacher had some things to do and temporarily walked out. Goku pulled out his phone and began to scroll through social media.
"Hey, you."
Goku jumped at the voice and looked over at Vegeta. "Huh? What do you need?" He was a bit nervous since he never really talked in this class. "Nothing just wanted to talk about anything. Don't know much around here and figured you'd tell me." Vegeta held Goku's gaze until the taller male looked away. "Uh... sure things around here are nothing too excited. We get the occasional fight but that's about it. Our school isn't much popular in sports or other stuff." Goku didn't really knew himself what was going on in the real world. He was always living in the past because of his mother. Always disconnected. "Really? That's a relief. My old school was the opposite. I was glad I moved here." Vegeta gave Goku a small smile. "So didn't catch your name. Probably should of started off with that, huh?"
Goku felt his face heat up. "Uh yeah... we should of." He said feeling nervous and flustered. "My name is Kakarrot but you can call me Goku." Vegeta nodded still holding that soft smile. "I'll call you Kakarrot." The teacher came back and the class resumed as normal. The only difference is Goku was left feeling strange and it was because of Vegeta.
