"Why the sudden interest?" Talya's voice rose was barely above a whisper. Like when someone dips their toes inside water, to test the temperature of the water... It was careful. Grandma Tutu sighed and blew a stray strand of white hair out of her left brown eye. "Maddy baby, please make us some tea darling." Before Madison could get up, Talya halted her movements with her manicured hand and stood up instead! "I'll make the tea, I need to think!" And to the kitchen she headed, the clicking of her heels the only sound loud enough to fill the silent house.
Madison peeked at her cousin from under the lashes, as a Psychology student she could somehow read the lines of exhaustion as more than what they seemed. There was a deep psychological problem in those half opened eyes that were slowly getting darker than their natural hazel colour, it was so clear yet people were obvious to it. Madison knew better than to diagnose mental illnesses as she was not yet qualified but she knew enough to try and psychoanalyse them in her head and get away with it!
After everyone had a cup of tea in front of them, Talya cleared her throat and placed her hands neatly on her lap. Sarah clumsily picked up the steaming white cup and brought it to her chapped lips to take a sip. The hot liquid fought to calm down the many emotions bubbling inside of her, tea usually calmed her. Tea and alcohol! Speaking of alcohol, her grandmother was pouring some in her cup of tea. She was tempted to push her own cup to her so that she too could get some for herself, she sighed and placed her cup down. No she wouldn't drink alcohol. She needed to keep a clear mind! Well as clear as she could.
"I'm going to the bathroom!" Grandma Tutu watched her as she walked, as if in a trance. Her walk lacked it's usual sway, Sarah was shaped nicely and she knew it so she swayed slightly when she walked, recently it looked as though she forgot. When she disappeared down the corner the old woman looked at both the other, much younger women and raised her eyebrows. "Something is wrong with this child, something is really bothering her" Talya picked up her cup of tea and leaned back on her chair. "Oh don't worry, I think she will be alright"
Before both the other women could enquire about Talya's statement, Sarah walked into the room and sat down. Her face looked as though she had splashed it with water, her thin eyebrows were swept up oddly and her chin looked wet! The dark areas under her eyes however, were still very much there, one would say they were even more prominent now! "Oh I called the police, they'll be here in about twenty minutes!" Her voice was flat, resolutely so! She sipped the now warm tea slowly, studying the details on the dark table wondering what object they used to make the small sequential lines on the top surface!
"What did you call the police for?"
"I just.. I want to understand some things about this"
Her vision got a little bit hazy as she shifted her eyes to the white cup, she blinked and tried to look at it again only to see two blurry cups. She blinked a second time, now the cups were more than three and more blurrier than before. Her head felt extremely light, her eyes forced themselves close and she slumped in her seat quite uncomfortable, Talya reached for her and motioned for Madison to come and assist her with lifting her up! Together they picked her up from the chair and carried her up the stairs, with Grandma Tutu limping behind them!
"What in the...? Talya...wha...?" Grandma Tutu was struggling to word out her surprise. Her mouth was slightly open as she climbed the many stairs, whines of pain escaping her mouth. After Sarah was tucked into her bed safely, Talya left the two gaping ladies up Sarah's room and went downstairs, they joined her after a few minutes. "Talya, you better tell me what's going on! What was that?" The old woman was furious, shooting daggers at her daughter. Talya sighed and glanced at the door anxiously.
"I gave her something, she looked exhausted!" As if on cue, the doorbell rang and Talya practically ran to open the door. "Officers, what a surprise! Do you have an update for us? Is something amiss" Her voice sounded genuinely surprised, as though she did not know what else they were doing there. The two officers looked at each other, puzzled. She invited them in and offered them seats! Once they were seated she looked at them hopefully and asked "What update do you have for us, have you found the person responsible for my daughter's misery?" Her eyes welled up slightly. Again the officers looked at each other puzzled and this time Grandma Tutu and Madison joined them. What game is she playing? Grandma Tutu wondered!
"Uh...your daughter called us?" It came opposite to how it was intended to. Talya feigned confusion and looked at the two confused officers. "My daughter just went to sleep, I was with her the whole day, she cannot possibly have called you!" Grandma Tutu's thin eyebrows furrowed as she looked at her daughter in surprise. Her expression morphed into being amused as Talya convinced the officers that Sarah couldn't have possibly called them and if she had it was probably by accident because if she had meant to, she wouldn't have gone to sleep.
The officers bid them farewell and headed out of the door, reassuring Talya that it was no problem after she apologized profusely for having caused inconvenience. After she closed the door grandma Tutu shook her head and rose from her seat with a small groan. "You...you are something else Talya! You're something else!" Her voice trailed off as she went up the stairs to go and check up on her granddaughter. Madison looked at her aunt in wonder. What was that?!
