Chapter 10:
"Again," I urged Xavier on.
It's been a week since the introduction ceremony and our kiss. We haven't gone any further than that. Although I would be complaining if we did.
Xavier and I were sparring in the training ring along with most of the warriors. Most sparring with someone, some running along the track, and the remaining practicing punches on the punching bags. There were also a few outside in their wolf form.
I focused back on Xavier and started to circle him. He followed and noted my movement. I was purposely favoring my left side. I did this to help him practice looking for weaknesses and ways to take down an opponent. He saw I was using my left side, so he went for the right.
I quickly changed and blocked his attack, our practice swords clashing. He pushed me back. I acted like he was overpowering me, and right as he was about to make the fatal blow, I rolled around him and stood up.
Xavier looked surprised and whirled around to face me, but immediately got back into position, blocking the attack I was about to place. We continued to spar for a few minutes, mostly circling and clashing then breaking apart, until he lost his footing. I swept my leg out and knocked him down. I then put my blunt-edged sword to his throat. I won.
"Good job," I panted, sweat sliding down my brow. I held out a hand for him to grip.
He nodded and took my outstretched hand. He hauled himself up.
He was also panting and sweat was also dripping down his face.
"We'll take a break."
He followed me to where our water bottles were. We both took a big drink of our own water.
There was still about two hours of training left. Most packs do a joined session, everyone doing the same thing, but that's not how we do things. I thought it would be better if everyone worked on their weakest areas, so they could better themselves. Of course, we had someone monitoring everyone and their workouts. Most of the time it was Gamma Rose, sometimes Beta Thomas. I had alpha work to do most of the time, but the impending war changed things.
My thought process was simple, everyone works on their weak areas and when we do come together, we're the best we can be. Why waste energy on something you're good at?
Yes, everyone needs to review all the skills to fight, but we don't all need to do it together.
I figured with the last two hours Xavier and I could work in our wolf forms, and it seems like most of the pack thought so too. People were going outside and shifting, some staying inside.
"Ready?"
Xavier nodded and I walked outside with him.
I went behind a tree and shifted into my golden brown wolf, and met Xavier in his bluish-black wolf. It turns out it wasn't a trick of the moon. His fur is actually blueish-black.
We move toward the clearing where we usually train. Some pack members were already sparring together, others getting ready to run.
We take our spots on the outskirts of the clearing and bend low into a defensive position. We circle and jump at each other. We clash and break apart, circling again, as we did in the training ring.
I made it look like my back left paw was hurt, to see if Xavier noticed. He did and went for that paw. I blocked him and we clashed, unlike last time, I lost my footing and Xavier took the opportunity and pinned me, his jaw around my throat.
He got off of me and I stood up. I wolfishly grinned at him. He grinned right back.
We could only do so much in wolf form, that didn't involve killing each other.
Most of the exercise was running through the trees, avoiding obstacles, like trees and rocks. We also worked on tracking things.
After two hours of training, we leave and grab a snack and shower. Then I head to my office, Xavier following.
I sigh as I plop down into the chair, Xaiver chilling on the opposite side of the desk in his usual chair.
"We need to get you a chair so you can sit over on this side."
He looked at me, picked up the chair, and brought it to my side. He gave me a look that said, There, problem solved.
"Ok, smart alec," I rolled my eyes.
We worked on papers, Xavier mostly learning all of the pack members' names, ages, and occupations. We were working for about an hour and a half when Thomas barged in.
I shot up from my seat, almost knocking it over.
"What is it?"
"The Twilight Moon pack is marching toward us as we speak."
I went and grabbed my fighting gear that I kept for safekeeping in my office
"How many?"
"From our reports, 100 pack warriors and 300 rogues."
