don't let it break your heart

"Hey, Benjamin..." I said to my cousin once he answered the phone. My voice was barely audible as I didn't know how to choke out the words that wanted to spill from my mouth. I was on the road, driving to school with my phone on speaker. It was now Friday and I had decided to actually go to school today, considering I haven't gone or even spoken to anyone in the past few days.

"Do you think my dad would threaten someone? Like, with murder?" I shook my head once the words left my lips. I sounded so stupid asking the question. He obviously couldn't be. Could he?

The line was silent on the other end for about thirty seconds before the sound of laughter rang through. "That was good, you had me. You sounded, I don't know, all serious and shit. Almost had me there, not 'gonna lie." He laughed loudly yet again.

I sighed, "Yeah, just joking. See you soon, Ben. I love you." I said before hanging up. I couldn't be mad at his response, but I couldn't say I wasn't disappointed. If I was in his shoes I'd think I was joking too.

The school day had gone by extremely quickly. Chase wasn't in school and according to everyone who was friends with him, he hasn't been since the night he stumbled into my my house. Closing my car door and walking inside the house, I let out a breathe I hadn't realized I was holding. I was...nervous? Chase hadn't reached out to me and has gone MIA just after telling me my father threatened him.

"Anyone home?" I called out, but already knew the answer. No one was. My father had extended his stay in Miami for unknown reasons and my stepmother decided to go stay with him for however long he'd decide to be there.

I rolled my eyes at absolutely nobody and made my way to the kitchen, deciding I needed to eat something. The only problem was that there was no food in the kitchen, "Of course." I huffed, walking to the door I just came in from.

After about ten minutes of driving I made it to a small Chinese food spot. One that I remembered was Chase's favorite. I smiled at the memory of us, before making my way inside the tiny restaurant.

Once I finished placing my order, as if on cue, the bells on the door rang and Chase walked through. As much as I tried to avert my gaze, I couldn't. He looked as perfect as always.

"Miss, your order." A man came up to me after a few moments with a bag full of food. I thanked him and made my way over to where Chase stood.

"Hey stranger." I gave him a soft smile to which he rolled his eyes, "A 'nice to see you' would've been a little more respectful, don't 'ya think?" I asked, trying to lighten the mood.

It was obvious he didn't want to talk to me, and if it was anyone else I recognized in here I would've ignored them. But it was Chase fucking Hudson. The boy I couldn't seem to find myself getting over anytime soon. The boy who told me he loved me only days ago and was now ignoring me.

I let out a sigh of defeat, patting his shoulder "Love you too." I rolled my eyes and with that I walked out the door. A part of me hoped he would come after me, but my life wasn't a movie or a book.
