Chapter 6// My crush stole my cupcake
I almost don’t hear the doorbell over the vacuum cleaner.
“Lois!” Jesse yells over the droning noise, waving his hand to try and catch my attention. “The physiotherapist is here!” I frown at this news, pressing the button to turn off the vacuum and succumbing to the bliss of silence. The physiotherapist? Jennifer never told me a physiotherapist is coming today. Even Jesse looks stressed by the thought: a small line forms between his eyebrows as he frowns. Maybe he didn’t know either.
“No-one told me a physiotherapist was coming today,” I tell him, leaning over the polished kitchen counter to unplug the vacuum. “I’ll grab the door. Is your mom downstairs already?” Jesse nods, and I hurriedly brush my hands on my jeans to rid of the dust before jogging towards the front door. After a short fumble with the locks, I swing it open. A woman stands on the doorstep with a smile on her face. Her fluffy dark hair hangs down just above her shoulders, and she holds a clipboard and a black duffel bag. She looks friendly, but stranger danger and all.
“It’s nice to meet you,” The lady outstretches her free hand and shakes mine with a smile. “I’m Anne: I’m a physiotherapist. I’m here to discuss Jennifer’s injury and the various options we have for her care plan.” She looks expectantly at me, and I realise after a second that she wants me to introduce myself as well.
“Lois,” I greet with a shy smile, “I’m a friend of Jennifer’s son.” Yeah, no need to tell a stranger that I’m the reason Jennifer actually needs a care plan…
“Anything but actually,” Jesse protests from behind me. I whirl around at the feel of his breath so close to my ear, eyes narrowing as I bump into his chest. He stares down at me with a smug smile. He so obviously meant to scare me. “Come in,” Jesse says to Anne with a charming smile, shoving me subtly out of the way to allow the physiotherapist to enter the doorway. “I’m Jesse: Jennifer’s son.” Anne nods politely before entering the house. She removes her polished shoes and follows Jesse through to the living room, where I assume Jennifer is waiting for her. Why didn’t Jennifer mention it to us? I sigh and close the front door, mildly irritated that Jesse thought it appropriate to make me look like an idiot in front of the doctor. Great start Lois. You sure have a way with meeting people, don’t you?
Jesse pokes his head out of the living room door to spot me, his unruly blonde hair mussed around on the top of his head and sea green eyes sparkling. “Coming?”
I fume silently.
“I don’t like her,” Jesse mouths to me, “She’s scary.”Well that’s basically what I think about everybody in the human race Jesse, so get in line.

“Right Jennifer,” Anne says, flipping impatiently through the sheets in her folder while she perches politely on the edge of the couch. “You have two femoral stress fractures, caused from a low speed impact on your left side…” She draws out the words, frowning, before looking up at Jennifer. “You also had a mild concussion. Are you feeling any better from that? No nausea, headaches etc.?”Jennifer smiles with closed lips, settling back into the couch. Her wheelchair stands proudly next to her, ready to use. “All better,” She informs the Doctor.
