The song that Amelia sings and Alec over to the side>>>>>>>
Chapter 11
Food was running low. We were barely eating enough to survive. Hunger pains plagued us all day, making it nearly impossible to focus on anything else. Alec would try to savage for food but all the stores have already been thoroughly looted.
"Maybe I could try hunting? Or learn what plants are edible?" Alec suggested one day. It wasn't a horrible idea, I just didn't know how we would learn any of those skills.
My recovery was slow, since my body wasn't getting enough nutrients to repair itself. Alec had made it his mission to fast so I could eat more. I told him that I'm not going to eat more just because he's eating less, so he stopped his fast.
After a week of training I was stronger though, so we packed up our combined supplies. Alec carried the gun, ammunition, our remaining food (we still had the cans of food that I had before), water, and first aid kit. While I carried the battering baton, a sleeping bag, a extra change of clothes for both of us, matches, the map, and butchers knife. A lot of the supplies we got from the house like the knife, first aid kit and sleeping bag.
Before we left however I wanted one thing. "Follow me." I gestured for Alec to follow me.
I walked into the small bathroom off the kitchen. Rummaging through the drawers I found what I was looking for. I turned to Alec hand held up a pair of scissors.
Alec raised an eyebrow at me. "What are you going to do with those?"
"Nothing. But you're going to cut my hair."
Alec's eyes popped out of his head. "Are you sure you want me near your head with scissors?"
"Are you planing to slit my throat and make meat pies out of me?" I smirked.
"No." Alec deadpanned.
"Then yes I'm sure." I thrust the scissors into his hands, then turned my back to him.
"Why do you want to cut your hair?" Alec inquiries as he snips a small section of hair behind my ear.
"It's too long and is beginning to dread." Not washing your hair for a month is not a good style. It's past the greasy stage and is not plain disgusting.
Alec had cut a few more sections to my shoulders, it's not pretty but it'll do.
"Cut higher."
"How much higher?"
"I want a boy haircut."
Our eyes meet for a second in the mirror, then he moves his hand and snips off a section at the top of my scalp. Guys hair is so much easier to deal with and now isn't a time to win any beauty pageants.
Once Alec's done I examine my new do. Its pretty choppy but not horrible, it'll grow out and even out. It's shocking how something as simple as hair can change a person. With such short hair my neck looks extra long and my face looks rounder, less hollow form starving. But I also felt stronger-empowered- like I'm ready to face anything.
I turn to Alec and smile. "Thanks."
"My pleasure. I've always wanted to be a barber." Without any more delay we put on our packs and headed out.
I wasn't thrilled about setting out with such little food, but it was nice having someone who can help carry load. With two of us we could carry come extra supplies like the sleeping bag. Starting on the long journey again was more daunting than the last time. I knew more of what to expect, and I expected this to be long and hard.
