Prologue
The forest was quiet and a soft breeze could be heard delicately blowing through the trees. A full moon was the only light source to shine on the atrocities being committed on this cold winter's night. Some people ask the question "If a tree were to fall with no one around, would it make a sound?" For years to come after this night, the question would instead be rephrased as "If only one person bears witness to unimaginable acts, did it actually happen?"
Marlene Woodlin couldn't believe her eyes; she didn't have time to stop and think about what this would mean for the future. All she had time to do was take action. She knew she was going to be killed tonight as her husband was, but as soon as her daughter was safe she was at peace with that- welcomed it, even. For a life without your soulmate was no life at all, everybody knew that.
Marlene did her best to ignore the snarls and growls coming from all around her as she ran as fast as she could to the main house. The smell of blood and fear was thick in the air, assaulting her already frayed senses. She let out a joyful whimper when her pack's headquarters came into view. That was where the pups were, where her pup was.
An adrenaline rush coursed through her veins as she ran even harder, hopping over the crumpled fence, and trampling on the already broken down door with her boots. Marlene heard the scared whimpers of the pups as she slowed to a stop in front of the basement. Channeling her shifter strength, she easily ripped the door off of its hinges and took the stairs down by two.
The sight that greeted her made her heart restrict. "Please don't hurt us!"
The terrified Omega trembled, trying to gather up all of the pups around her.
"I'm not going to hurt you. It's me, Sonya. I've come to help." Marlene cooed in her thick Australian accent.
She realized that nobody else came back for their pups as she counted them. There were originally five in the pack and five stood on their paws, shaking with fear before her.
"Why have their parents not come?" She questioned. "Is everybody gone?"
Sonya said a shy yes and a feeling of dread settled in the pit of Marlene's stomach. That means that everyone is really dead. The thought unsettled her.
She clicked her tongue and stuck her hand out for her own pup, wanting to comfort her. She was the most beautiful pup anyone had ever seen... and the reason their pack was currently dead.
She threw himself into her mother's welcoming arms and whimpered. Marlene stroked her snow white fur that was only marred by the black splotch on her face which formed into a "T" that traveled above her eyes, one green and one blue, then in between them. "It's okay, baby. Mama's here. There's no need to be afraid."
A sudden noise that sounded like shattering glass didn't do anything to verify safety for her pup and she shook more. "Okay, Sonya. I understand you're an Omega, but it's time to put on some big girl panties. Grab those two pups by the scruff and I'll get the rest."
Sonya lifted a grey and rusty brown pup off of the ground, careful not to hurt them, while Marlene stuffed her own pup into her shirt in just the right position and lifted the remaining two blonde brothers. A whine escaped their mouths but there was no time to think of another plan.
"Hold on, my daughter. Whatever you do, don't fall out." Marlene felt her little claws tighten onto the fabric and they dashed upstairs, going the back way instead of the way she originally came.
"Sonya get in front of me. My reflexes are better than yours."
The lower ranking wolf did as she commanded and they were out of the main house in two minutes flat. "Now run, Sonya. As fast as you can!"
