The word of God is God's gift to us believers. There is nothing better than the word of God and its power in changing us. In the previous chapters, we learned that every word you receive is a seed sown. Loving the word of God and studying the word regularly is what reinforces our commitment to God.
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. Romans 10:17 (NIV)
What happens when the believer studies the word of God? Faith comes. Faith doesn't come naturally. There is human faith, but studying the word of God gives us the faith of God. When God created the heavens and the earth and everything in it, He had faith. And because He believed, He spoke the world into existence.
It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken."[] Since we have that same spirit of[] faith, we also believe and therefore speak, - 2 Corinthians 4:13 (NIV)
The first step is believing. When you believe, only then can you have faith. You can never have faith in the things you do not believe in. I believe the word of God has power to save just about any person you could think of. It's not faith, if you can see it physically. Faith is crazy, if you ask me. You have to have faith that God's word has the power to change you. It is never instantaneous, but gradually, little commitment to the word, a little persistence in wanting to know God, that is what causes us to change.
See how I love your precepts;
preserve my life, Lord, in accordance with your love. - Psalm 119:159 (NIV)David loved the word of God. Loving the word of God is synonymous with loving God. The word of God, is God's word to us. If I have a word for you, it must mean it comes from me. It should mean I am the source of the word said or written. God is the source of everything written in the scriptures. There is nothing written that never came from God. Remember, you have to believe, only then can you have faith in God's word.
I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil. - Psalm 119:162 (KJV)
David must have really loved God. He must have really enjoyed His word. The Bible is not just some book that we read to pass time. The Bible is God's word. I know that we already know. Sometimes we neglect studying the word of God and we find ourselves in many problems. There is something about every topic in the Bible. God is always speaking. It is not just about prayer, prayer is obviously essential. It is about the word of God also. When you speak to God in prayer, He responds to you through His word.
David rejoiced. He discovered such great treasure. Do you know how exciting it is to find treasure? If you have watched any movies that had a scene about some kind of treasure, you would discover that it is usually hidden. I have seen it in the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel. The pirates would literally fought to have a hold of the treasure. They were always ready to kill each other. There was never enough treasure to cater for all their needs.
It is different with the word of God. There is more than enough for everyone that wants to grow in the knowledge of God. David was happy with the word of God. Happy as someone that finds money or some huge profit. The word of God is profitable. To whom you ask? The word is profitable to us.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,17 so that the servant of God[] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
The word of God teaches, rebukes, corrects and trains us. Now all of these things are useful and important so that we become righteous. Without being taught, righteousness becomes a mystery. Without being corrected, we would remain stagnant. Without being rebuked, we would never know what we need to change in us. All of these things help us to become spiritually attuned to God.
Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them." - John 14:21 (NIV)
Loving God is synonymous with keeping His word. The more you love His word and obey Him, the closer you are to Him. The only difference between King Saul and King David is that one obeyed and the former disobeyed. When we obey God, He manifests Himself in us.
Father, may you manifest yourself in us as we keep your word. Help us to love the word of God. Help us to know you. Help us to think about you. Thank you for being patient and kind. Thank you for being faithful. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
