Akutagawa could hardly believe that this was real, that he was actually going on a date with you.

You, who was so kind and gentle to everyone, and who had never looked at him the way others did, or said a cruel word to him, or anyone for that fact. You were like an angel, so full of light, and happiness, and your smile.

That was the first thing he had noticed about you, was your smile, and the fact that it had been directed at him with no judgement or no ill intention whatsoever. And he felt his heart flutter, for that's what it had been, as much as he had tried to deny it, and as much as he wanted to glare at you, he just couldn't. You hadn't done anything to deserve that. No, you were just the pretty girl that Gin had been politely talking to one day when he had picked her up.

You had given him that pretty smile, politely introducing yourself as your cheeks flushed. You had thought he was attractive, but Akutagawa was too busy worrying about his own blush being visible to notice yours. It had been the source of teasing from his sister that night, and try as he might, he just couldn't get you off of his mind, since a simple act like smiling was still so foreign to him.

He saw you again the next week, waiting in line for coffee, and you started up a friendly conversation with him, giving him that ever angelic smile of yours. He learned that you worked at a local bakery on that block, but you really wanted to be a writer, and that your parents had passed away when you were little, but not to feel bad because you had gotten used to it. He liked the sound of your voice, it was so soothing and gentle that he actually stayed to talk to you even after both of you had your drinks. And when you asked him for your number, he had frozen up for a moment in panic, trying to figure out a nice way to say no, but he could have sworn he heard Gin's voice telling him to just get her number because it was so clear that she was into him. He had given you his number before he even really knew what he was doing.

Akutagawa didn't tell anyone about you at first, though it was only a few days Gin spotted him with the faintest smile at home and managed a sneak at his phone screen. She didn't tell him that she knew, knowing he would be defensive about it, but other Mafia members did notice that Akutagawa seemed a little different lately, a little less on edge. Not that anyone would bring it up to him, but clearly your sweet messages were doing something to him. He wasn't a very good texter, his responses were usually pretty brief and to the point, but you didn't mind. What started out as polite conversation had turned into good morning/night messages, asking him how his day was, giving him the occasional compliment, and now finally asking if he wanted to go on a walk with you.

He was the rabid dog of the Port Mafia, and his feelings towards you scared even him. He couldn't be with an innocent like you, he knew he should forget you, or push you away, or do something. He didn't really want to push you away, he just didn't want that sweetness tainted, he didn't want you to ever get hurt because of him and the line of work he was in.

But then again, he couldn't deny his feelings towards you, and he wanted to see that beautiful smile of yours in person again, though he would never say that out loud. As he walked towards the park bench you were sitting at, his heart was pounding with nerves and anxiety, but the moment your head tilted up and your eyes met, he swore he felt his heart stop.

You got up to greet him, that pretty smile on your face as you kept his gaze, noticing the way that the corners of his lips tilted up ever so slightly.

"Hi," you greeted, somewhat shyly, though you never dropped your gaze from him. You couldn't look away, for here he was in person. Just the two of you, away from the crowds and the sunlight, standing in front of each other.

"Hi," he replied, just as quietly, his heart pounding inside of his chest as he gazed down at you. You were so beautiful, and not just in appearance, but your heart, your character, everything about you.

You somehow smiled even brighter upon hearing his voice, your own heart beating just as fast as you watched him. "Come on, I know a really good place to look at the stars," you said softly, to which he simply nodded his agreement as the two of you walked together. You didn't have to say anything, for the moment that you two shared didn't need any words to go with it.

You two didn't kiss that night, nor did you hold hands, or even hug. You could sense how tense he was even being around you, though your gentle words and actions helped him to feel more comfortable, and he would never be able to verbally thank you for that. Not just for that night, but for every night following that.

Slowly but surely, it became a routine for the two of you to meet up, something that he found himself looking forward to, and of course you did as well. You were always so gentle with him, always listening when he wanted to talk, and never questioning subjects he wasn't quite ready to discuss.

You were a secret, his secret, his one weakness that he couldn't let anyone find out about. Not just because of his job, but he also didn't need anyone teasing him.

And finally, after about a month of meeting, Akutagawa had a question for you.

"Y/N...How do you give a hug?" He asked, very softly, almost scared.

Your heart melted, and you didn't hesitate to pull him into one, nestling your head underneath his chin as you held him close to you. He patted your back gingerly before he very gently wrapped his arms around you in return, as if he was scared of hurting you, and he still was.

But slowly, very slowly, he was learning to open up to you. His angel.
