A/N:  [Human AU] This starts in the third person, eventually shifting to Patton's perspective.

"You get the bags, I'll check us in?"

"Sounds good, lovebug."

Patton kissed his boyfriend's forehead before getting out of the car to head towards the trunk. They'd been driving since late morning to get to a beachside hotel. They were taking a short vacation to get some much needed alone time. Sure, Patton and Janus loved their friends, but they sometimes got in the way of spending quality time together.

While Patton fumbled with their bags, Janus went inside to check. There was only one employee in the lobby, which was understandable since it was getting pretty late. The couple had greatly underestimated the time it would take to get there.

"Excuse me?" Janus spoke up, getting the attention of the sole worker. Once they turned around, he could see that their nametag read 'Parker'.

"Are you Patton Smith?" Parker asked, looking at something on their computer.

"No. Patton's my partner."

"Ah, alright. Have you checked to see if you're eligible for any of our couples rewards?"

"No..?"

"Well married couples can receive up to 26% off their overall experience. In addition to that, couples who have been wed for five years or more receive complimentary breakfast." Parker explained. "Are you and your partner married?"

Janus and Patton had been dating for a little over two years, and neither of them had ever brought up the idea of engagement. Only after taking a quick glance over his shoulder to make sure that Patton was out of earshot did Janus answer.

"Yes, we've been married for three years." he answered. He wanted to allay any suspicions and only claim to be eligible for the lowest level discount. Janus was wearing gloves, which made his lack of a ring more excusable.

"Alright, in that case I'll go ahead and make the appropriate adjustments to your overall costs." Parker started typing on the computer, leaving Janus to try and figure out how on Earth to explain to Patton that they were married now.

"Hey, sweetie." Patton appeared at Janus's side, the two bags in either hand. Janus smiled sweetly and pressed a quick kiss on his faux-husband's lips. A bit flustered, Patton blushed pink and looked at the floor.

"Here's your room card." Parker handed Janus the card. "You should be all set. Breakfast ends at 10:30. Also, make sure to mention your marital status when the two of you get food from here."

"Sh*t." Janus thought, almost visibly wincing. Patton shot him a half-confused and half-stern look before looking back to Parker.

"Thank you!" Patton thanked them before dragging Janus to the elevators. The second the elevator doors shut, Patton's smile faltered. "What did they mean, 'mentioning our marital status'?"

"/I don't know what you're talking about/."

"Janus~."

"Oh, look! This is our floor. Better get moving before the doors close!" Janus rambled, hoping to distract his boyfriend from his thoughts.

They found their room and started unpacking. Once their things were settled, they took turns showering. After a good number of hours in the stuffy car, the two were eager to freshen up. Janus went second, giving him plenty of time to think about how he was going to defend his actions when Patton inevitably brought up his little fib.

Patton's POV.

I wrap a towel around my shoulders to catch any dripping water. I don't want my cat onesie getting matted or anything. Janus has been taking a while in the shower, so I go ahead and crawl into bed. To keep myself from falling asleep, I turn on the tv. There's some baking competition on.

"This'll do." I say aloud to nobody. Once I'm settled into bed, I let my mind drift. The same thought keeps popping into my head:

Why did Janus tell that person in the lobby that we're married?

I'm left to theorize for a little while longer before Janus comes out from the bathroom. He's wearing the Hufflepuff pajama pants I let him borrow a few months ago. I can't stop myself from smiling. It's really cute how he likes to take my clothes.

"What're you watching?" He asks, climbing into bed with me.

"A baking competition show." I answer, almost immediately snuggling up next to him. Janus kisses my head and holds me close. We cuddle in silence for a little while before he speaks up.

"So... about what person in the lobby said..."

"Yeah?"

"I uhh.. I heard about a discount for married couples, so... so I kind of told them that we're married. I lied..." Janus admits guiltily. I sigh and shake my head a bit. He knows how I feel about lying.

"We've talked about this. Lying is bad, remember?" I say, the disappointment clear in my voice.

"I remember. But this time it's a good lie! It's saving us money, which we can definitely use in the future."

"What for?"

"You've been talking about wanting a dog for forever. Saving money where we can will help us raise enough funds to invest in something that will make you happy."

"I guess..." I sigh, curling my head to my chest.

"Hey, look at me?" Janus asks gently. I feel his hand hold my chin, but he doesn't lift it. He gives me a choice whether to talk to him or not. Another reason I love my snake boy. I make the decision to hear him out and lift my head to meet his eyes.

"Yeah?"

"I love you."

"Sssstop it." I hiss teasingly. Janus rolls his eyes fondly and holds me closer. I snuggle into my wonderful boyfriend, starting to feel sleepy. Janus takes my glasses off for me, setting them on the bedside table. Content and eager to start tomorrow, I let myself fall asleep in his arms;

My favorite place to sleep.
