Zacks POV
When I got back I went inside because I missed lunch. I walked inside and Debbie was in the kitchen as per usual. She was at the sink doing dishes. She must have heard me because she turned around, "Oh! There you are. I was getting worried. I called you in for lunch and you didn't answer. Where were you?" she asked.
"I had stuff to do before lunch." was all I said. Debbie nodded once and said, "Okay, well leftovers are in the fridge. Just pop them in the microwave. Eric is out in the fields but told me to tell you that you had to help April in the barn with the animals." Greeeaaat.
"Kay." I said and put my food in the microwave. When the microwave beeped and I opened it up and the smell of the delicous cheesy rice and and chrilled chicken made my mouth water.
I wolfed my food down without a word to Debbie. Out of my periferal vision I would see her glance my way with worry in her eyes.
I put my plate in the sink and went outside to the barn where April was. I saw her brushing one of the horses. She turned to me and asked, "Where were you at lunch?"
"I had stuff to do." I said, keeping my answer short and simple, but of course this being April, only inclined her to ask more questions.
"Like what? I mean, you just came here a couple days ago. What could you possibly have to do already?" I glarred at her, and watched Aprils eyes get big. "Okay. Never mind."
I watched her brush one of the horses shinny brown coat. "If you want, grab a brush and you can start on Lucky, the black stallion over there." she pointed to a big, and I mean big, horse in the stall next to hers.
I picked up a brush and began stroking it's shiny sleek black coat, enjoying the silence for once. "So," Oh god. I knew it was to good to be true. "I was wondering if I could ask you a question." she said.
"If I say no, are you still going to ask anyway?" I asked, not bothering to look up at her. "Yeah, probably." she answered. I sighed and gave her an exasperated look, "Fine. Go ahead."
"Um, okay well..... Uh- That night, in your room- there was a picture on your floor. Who was it?" out if all the questions to ask me, she chose that one, on that particular subject. But knowig that she was going to ask again at some other point anyway, I answered.
"Carly, Jemma and me." I said, still brushing. April stopped brushing her horse and looked at me, "Who is Carly and Jemma?" her voice was kind, and carefull, like she was afraid she would hurt me, as if I was a porciline doll that she was afraid she would break.
"Carly was my girlfriend when I was 15." I said, trying to avoid the subject of Jemma, but of course not sucseeding, "And Jemma?"
"Jemma was mine and Carlys' daughter."
