[The following day, Freyr and Mitch spend the morning and early afternoon tending to their farm, making sure the fields are watered and the animals are all fed. One of the pigs gets loose, and Freyr has to lure it back into the pen with a carrot tied to a stick.]
[When evening falls and the sun starts to set, the boys get geared up for their SCP hunt. They are in the basement, at the lockers where they store their gear.]
Freyr: Don't forget. Raptor gloves tonight.
Mitch: I know. *tucks a pair of thick puncture resistant gloves into his utility belt* What's the plan to catch it? You said SCP-1049 looks like an owl, right?
Freyr: *nods as he hooks a rope around his belt* It is an owl. Black and white. It just has pink eyes instead of brown or gold.
Mitch: That doesn't sound so bad.
Freyr: If it bites you, the pressure from its beak causes your whole skeleton to dissipate after ten seconds.
Mitch:
Mitch: Oh.
[Freyr lets out a snort of amusement at the petrified expression on Mitch's face.]
Freyr: Normally, it attacks humans on sight, but with the way SCP-023 responded to you yesterday...I'm not sure what to expect.
Mitch: *confused* What do you mean?
[Freyr does a once-over on his gear.]
Freyr: You got everything?
Mitch: Yep.
Freyr: *looks at his digital watch* Ten minutes, and then we'll head out.
[The two of them start walking upstairs.]
Freyr: What I meant is that everything we've learned about SCP's doesn't match up with what we've been experiencing.
[They walk over to the burning fireplace, and Freyr pulls a log from the woodpile and adds it to the fire. Mitch stands in front of him, and for a few minutes, the crackling flames are the only sound to fill the silence.]
Freyr: Do you remember the day we saw SCP-096 on the edge of the farm?
Mitch: *swallows hard* Yea, it was terrifying. I was only 9 years old. *quieter* That was just a couple days after mom and dad disappeared.
Freyr:
Mitch:
Freyr: What do you remember?
Mitch: We were walking along the edge of the main road, and he came out of the field right in front of us.
Freyr: And?
Mitch: And...he just looked at us and then kept walking into the woods.
Freyr: *shakes his head* That's exactly what I mean, Mitch. We should have died that day.
Mitch: *stiffens* Wh-what?
Freyr: SCP-096 attacks those who look at its face.
Mitch:
Freyr: We looked directly into its eyes. Both of us. SCP-096 should have killed us on the spot.
Mitch: But...wait, but that doesn't - then we should be - huh?
Freyr: *shrugs*.
Mitch: *shakes his head* What-
Freyr: I thought it was just a fluke, since we were so young and there aren't any official records of SCP-096 attacking children, but after yesterday, I just...I don't know, Mitch. I don't know what to expect from our next attempt at a containment procedure.
